From the vault: Opponents in focus - Doncaster

Another of Pompey's no power championship opponents will be Doncaster, so they are next to come under the microscope as PFC-Jono has a look at them - we revisit this ahead of the meeting tomorrow...

Doncaster Rovers are certainly a team on the up after Doncaster secured two impressive mid-table finishes since being promoted to the Championship via the League One play-offs in 2008. They have been constant in their short stint in the Championship so far and have raised a few eyebrows with their impressive performances. There's not a lot of history between these two sides as Pompey and Doncaster Rovers have met only 10 times before - and never in the second-tier of English football, Pompey have proved very successful in their meetings with Doncaster as they have only lost one of those meetings, a 2-0 defeat at Rovers' old Belle Vue ground in October 1979.

Head-to-Head: These sides have only met 10 times over Pompey's 112 year history and Pompey have proved very successful in their meetings with Doncaster only loosing just one of their meetings. This season will be the first time ever these two sides in the Championship or the 2nd tier of the football league. The last time these two sides met was in 1983 in the 3rd division in April 1983 with Billy Rafferty and Neil Webb scoring the goals in the 2-0 victory.

League standing last 5 years:
2009/10 - 12th Championship
2008/09 - 14th Championship
2007/08 - 3rd League 1
2006/07 - 11th League 1
2005/06 - 8th League 1

Fixture Dates:
Portsmouth v Doncaster - 13th November 2010
Doncaster v Portsmouth - 12th February 2011

The Man in Charge: Sean O'Driscoll is on his 10th season in management with 6 seasons at Bournemouth where he got the club promoted via the play-offs in 2002/03. After 6 successful years as Bournemouth managers O'Driscoll felt he needed a new challenge after 22 years at the club as a player and manager and this is how he ended up at Doncaster. He has instantly proved a fan favourite after getting Doncaster promoted via the League 1 play-offs against Yorkshire rivals Leeds beating them 1-0.

Key Player: Billy Sharp - He's a player that has seemed to be about for ages and it's hard to believe that he is only 24. He made his name at Scunthorpe with a very impressive goal scoring record scoring 53 goals in just 82 games which makes it better than a goal every two games. But his career took a step backwards after signing for his boyhood club Sheffield United only scoring 8 goals in 51 games. Last season he was loaned to Doncaster Rovers where he instantly became a fan favourite and quickly found his way back to his old goal scoring ways as he scored 15 goals in 30 league games and he caught the eye of many clubs. He proved he was essential for the club and he proved that he was he is a top class striker proving that he's a key player their side.

Doncaster made sure that they got his goal scoring services for the 2010/11 Npower season so they broke the bank and signed him for a Doncaster transfer record of 1.5 million.

Stadium: Doncaster Rovers stadium, the Keepmoat Stadium, is a multi-purpose stadium in Doncaster built in 2006, with a capacity of 15,231. It cost 32 million to construct and mainly used by Doncaster Rovers and is also used for Rugby League matches. The highest ever attendance at the Keepmoat stadium was 15,001 for the visit of Leeds United Never since has the attendance reached these numbers, not even for the visits of Spurs, Bolton Wanderers, or Aston Villa. But I'm sure with Pompey in town it would be a sell-out.
