From the vault: Opponents in focus - Forest

Another of Pompey's no power championship opponents will be Nottingham Forest, so they are next to come under the microscope as PompeyFrippy has a look at them - we revisit this ahead of the meeting tomorrow...

Stadium
Nottingham Forest Football Club's first stadium was the Forest Recreation Ground, where they played from their creation in 1865 until 1879, when they briefly moved to the Meadows. In 1880 most of their matches were being played at Trent Bridge, which was soon changed to Parkside, when it became their official home ground. In 1898, the City Ground was built and Forest have played their ever since, while the ground itself has gone through several makeovers. Today, the ground holds just over 30,000 fans, but the future has a new ground in store for Forest, with plans of a 50,000 capacity stadium, which will be one of the 15 stadia that hosts World Cup football in 2018, should the country's bid be successful.

Trophies
Forest have collected an impressive array of Trophies over the years, including 2 FA Cup's (in 1898 and 1959), and 4 League Cups (in 1978, 1979, 1989 and 1990). But their most coveted prizes are winning the First Division in 1978, and then going on to win the European Cup in 1979 and retaining it in 1980.

Last 7 Season Finishing Positions
2003-04 - Division 1 - 14th
2004-05 - Championship - 23rd (Relegated)
2005-06 - League 1 - 7th
2006-07 - League 1 - 4th (Lost play-offs)
2007-08 - League 1 - 2nd (Promoted)
2008-09 - Championship - 19th
2009-10 - Championship - 3rd (Lost play-offs)

Previous Meetings
The last time these two sides met in the league was in Pompey's promotion season in 2002. The opening game of that season pitted these two sides against one another and Pompey came out on top, thanks to goals from Deon Burton and Vincent Pericard. The return fixture in late December at the City Ground is one to remember for a young Matty Taylor who scored a 25 yard screamer on his weaker right foot. Pericard put the game to bed with 3 minutes left before a consolation from Forest's Dawson. The teams also met in a League Cup match in 2003, where Pompey won 4-2 after extra time. Pompey have won the last 5 games between these two clubs.

This season
The sides will meet at Fratton Park on the 30th of October, and again at the City Ground on the 15th of January.

Manager
Billy Davies, once a tenacious midfielder, gave managing a shot in 1998 with Motherwell, and has since had spells at Preston and Derby. He began managing Forest on the 1st of January 2009 and after a slow start to his first full season, he guided Forest to 3rd place, eventually losing to Blackpool in the Play-offs. With Davies at the helm Forest are 8/1 2nd favourites to win the Championship this season.

One to Watch
I've picked centre-back Wes Morgan from the squad as he is a tall, strong and well experienced defender who has played nearly 300 games for Forest. He has been consistently fit over the past 6 seasons, never playing any less than 40 league games a season. He was formed many great partnerships over the years and is one of the standout reasons why Forest leaked the 3rd fewest goals last season.

Fun Fact
Forest were one of the 12 teams that founded the Football Alliance in 1888, a league made up to rival the Football League. Of the 12 teams that competed in that initial season, only 3 still play under the name they adopted in the Alliance League (the others being Crewe and Grimsby). The league folded in 1892, and these clubs re-joined The Football League, and in doing so created the Second Division.

I remember from the fifties a Notts Forest left winger called Stuart Imlach, who always gave Pompey a hard time.

007 im told his son is Gary Imlach a sports journalist, i think he will have a depressing story to right as we hold on for a nervy win, ive gone 2-1 but suspect it will be 1-0; as long as we get 3 points.
