What now for The Herminator?

'The Herminator will now return to the side as the regular left back', not my vote, yours - although these findings from pompeyrug's poll are thoughts that I do not necessarily agree with to be honest...

If the guy would even return from injury to play again was something that many had doubts about - when it became apparent that he would be able to return to the game 'if' this would be with Pompey was in doubt for a little while as well.

Although, as we all now know, the iceman is back and back in action for the club, making his return last weekend at Hull as a late sub.

It is still far too early to know how well he will return, and it will take many weeks until he is up to full fitness - however much 'full fitness' will be with him now?

Carl Dickinson seems to very much have the passion and enthusiasm that The Herminator has, and I love this. Just watch the guy ahead of kick-off in any game, and his reaction at the end of it come what may - it is something else, and something that I really like and admire.

The problem with Dickinson is, whilst he has improved, I do seriously worry about his footballing ability at times as almost every winger that he comes up against skins him! So, as far as defending goes The Herminator is the better option - but even he was getting skinned more in his old age but his powers of recovery seemed stronger compared to Dickinson.

I am not entirely convinced that Hermann will become the regular left back again, I would say that he will be a regular as a squad player in various roles, sometimes as a starter. Although I would say - especially in the early stages of his recovery - more often than not as a sub.

Whatever though, if history has taught us nothing with The Herminator it is never write the guy off, so I would do this at my peril...

  • What the poll asked - What now for The Herminator?

  • How you voted - Regular at left back 86%
Used regularly as a squad player 14%
    Regular in central defence 0%

Before we move on what are your thoughts on what the last poll concluded? You know what to do, thoughts below please guys...

I still think he is better than Dicko but I don't see himnplaying for a week or two just yet; the manager is big on fitness

As a player reading the game and delivery of the ball, then Herman is a much better player than Dickenson and should take the place when fully fit, although that really is the big question and will he have anything like the pace he would need?
    blarmy
honestly i'd rather see him in the middle this season, i doubt he has the pace a full back needs anymore and i'd much rather have him in the middle than sonko lol. that said if he can play once every other week or something on the left and keep up then thats fine by me, just gald to have him back tbh
    pompeym@
Agreed, play him in the middle, do not expose him on the flank.

altho if we do that who misses out in the middle?
when fit rocha john rocha would be one of the first names on my teamsheet these days, and not just from a defensive viewpoint - i also think that he and moko work well together. so, i would not leave out either for the herminator - but we could not, or would not, play of 3 would we...

From the Telegraph - Pompey have kept only two clean sheets so far this season but Cotterill refuses to push the experienced defender too hard. He told the News: "Does Hermann come straight in and play in the back four? "I would need to see how he comes back from the injury but I don't think he is quite ready yet. "If it's the Hermann of old, then for sure - he will have a place."

so, i would not leave out either for the herminator - but we could not, or would not, play of 3 would we......? Don't see why not Rug. Hermans never going to gallop again but the mans massive experience and personality are such a plus. His reading of the game knocks everyone elses into a cocked hat.....PUP....Play up Herman.

If we have the old Herman back, then I don't see that we will be leaving him on the bench. In all honesty, I don't see that we are that flush with players that we will be able to pick and choose. As soon as the Tues/Saturday games start again, we are going to need everyone given that we are bound to have suspensions and injuries.

It would be a shame if we leave Hermann on the bench. He has another year or two to give, maybe not at the highet level (anyway, we aren't playing there anymore), and we should use them fully. I wonder if we ever see another left back like him. Dicko is not good enough, and he should be the squad player. If Utaka keeps on showing promising moves, he would be our force on that side, and Hermann can be focused more on the defensive part.
