Is Mendy the right back option?
Whilst there are no direct quotes from the player himself about coming to Pompey, it is 'claimed' that we are interested in Bernard Mendy, who is quoted on sky sports as saying that he does want to return to England.
Currently he is a free agent, but training with Caen, after being released by Hull when they were relegated - well, in fact his contract was cancelled early.
From the limited I saw of him with Hull he looked a decent footballer, better than the footballer he looked when with Bolton earlier in his career, and would make a decent signing as a free agent.
Although, even if we are in fact interested in him, I retain my thoughts that a right back is not the priority, so do we need him?
Then again he can play further forward in midfield at a push and I 'think' that he can play in central defence too so he does have a fair degree of flexibility about him...
Steve Cotterill has recently said that Joel Ward's long-term future lies as a right back, so he is his long-term option in that role but it does still seem as though he is keen to bring in someone more experienced in the meantime though, perhaps Mendy is that man?

what position do you think we need more Rug? I'm presuming a play-maker, but i still think that when Webber comes back we should play him on the right with Lawrence in that role. and although Ward has done a fantastic job on the right Cotterill's right the last couple of games he's looked completely jaded and gave away that penalty and to be fair we shouldn't expect a 20year old to play every game.

that said, anyone think O'hara would be available on loan in January lol. A midfield with him, lawrence, utaka (if he's still playing well) and brown would be amazing in this league!

I don't think it will be Mendy that SC has targeted. Was he not quoted in the last week as saying that he had spoken to the players boss about a loan transfer and that it was now down to the player?

M@ in my opinion Pompey should be putting players in their positions Webber is not a winger. I also agree a good creative midfielder is a priority, but assuming we can afford it we should take Mendy.

If he wants to go to you and his wages are ok he could give the youngster time to develop with less pressure.

i dunno Russell, if (big if) i remember correctly Webber was awesome on the right before his injury? so why not use him there (if i'm right lol)

I think we DO need a right back... it's a key position to support LL and important for defence as well as attack and distribution!
I would be deeply disappointed if we didn't go after a talented creative midfielder - which I still feel is a major hole for us, we've shown we can go through patches of no scoring and we need a key to unlock defences on a consitent basis.
