The ideal Pompey strike pairing...

'Dave Kitson and Dave Nugent are the strike pairing that I would play', not my vote, yours - although these findings from veccccio's poll are thoughts that would agree with to be honest.

I think that Kitson, who has that quality about him that I think we have been lacking in a striker for a while really - he is mobile, skilful, can hold the ball up well and bring others into play and most importantly of all you, well I, DO have belief that when he has a chance he can - and more often than not will - take it, so he is a shoe-in for a starting place every week for me.

Nugent, as frustrating as he can be at times, does work hard so I do not think anyone can fault him for that. Other areas of his game, and sometimes his actions off-the-field as much as on it can be faulted though. He has always, for me, needed to be played as a striker with a partner alongside him so I could see these two working well together.

Problem is I am still not convinced if these two are playing together or if John Utaka - who to be fair has put in good shifts, defensively too, against Sheffield United and Leicester - is playing as part of a forward 3?

That said Utaka does seem to be playing a bit deeper so perhaps he is playing the wide left position in something that is more of a 4-4-2.

Either way, and whatever we are doing and did against Leicester can we see more of that in the future as we looked a genuine threat coming forward and I, for the first time in a while, had genuine belief that we could, and would, score virtually every time we attacked - granted sometimes more, depending on who was attacking, with some than others...

  • What the poll asked - I would play ........? & ..........? up front

  • How you voted - Kitson & Nuggat 67%
    Utaka & Kitson 25%
    Nuggat & Kanu 4%
    Kanu & Utaka 2%
    Kitson & Kanu 1%
    Utaka & Nugent 1%
    Other 0%

Before we move on what are your thoughts on what the last poll concluded? You know what to do, thoughts below please guys...

Missed this poll recently! Kitson and Utaka for me. I dont have patients for david Nugent unfortunately. He was decent against Liecester but not the best player on the pitch and when he did eventually score he still had to hit the keeper. As much as Utaka can be frustrating when he does get in front of goal he doesnt squander alot. I think that Kitson would find Utaka in the positions that he gets into as they both have a good footballing brain. Unfortunately Nugent doesnt

I agree with Brucey. I have always heralded Utak's, if he worked hard would be a class apart. Far better than Nuggat. How the hell did Nugg win m.o.m.????? The fact he earns 25k a week is testament to the fact you can be a lucky man to play pro football. But it is like the other plums wee have, Hughes, Donko, Muggins and Ashdown. How p**s poor is Ashdown! His decision making, starting position, crosses......., I thought Alan Knight was bad at crosses, but gee, Ashdown is worse. At least Knighty was a quality shot stopper.

Nugent Kitson is the stand out I'm not sure how anybody could fail to notice Nugent's work rate; yep he took two attempts to get his goal but he kept at it and the finishing touch was harder than the first attempt; a good save by the keeper deserves recognition. Kitson was off form tonight which leads me on to the fact; Pompey can't just rely on strikers to score, they need to create and finish from all over. As demonstrated in this and the previous game you can man mark strikers but if your mid fielders and defenders can do the biz then you have a strong chance of survival and scoring goals average of 1.5 per game will give a great plus goal difference and that means prizes in this league. Obviously it's not always going to work out our way, we aren't yet a match for the top 3 and we arent clear of danger by any means but there are reasons to be cheerful and survival looks quite likely
