'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Cotterill reflects on thumping Leicester

Pompey do not do things the quietly, or an easy way do they, and when we do something - be it good or bad - it is usually carried out in a spectacular way, which is what we did last night in front of the sky TV cameras as we recorded our first league win of the season when we spanked Leicester 6-1!

Steve Cotterill has continually said that we have deserved more than we have got from many games, and whilst I cannot say I have always agreed, he - as he told sky sports - was more than happy to see this win, and a convincing win at that, finally come: 'as I said before, we have good players. And we have had a lot to deal with at this football club.

'Our performances, certainly of late, have warranted a scoreline like that.'

Leicester being reduced to 10-men clearly helped us, and they quite literally gave us a 'helping hand' early on with a quite bizarre penalty, even so he gave credit to Leicester for the part that they played: 'unfortunately for Leicester they went down to 10 men. But they played their part in the game.

'I know we have won comfortably, but we must not take too much away from Leicester's 10 players.'

Again Cotterill said how a result like this had been coming, and how much it meant to everyone and how happy they are, although the thing that pleased him the most was the fact that the cameras witnessed this: 'my players are pleased, obviously, they have deserved this. This has been coming for a good week or so.

'I am just glad we have done it in front of the cameras as a lot more people will have seen this.

'A big congratulations to the lads tonight.'

I know I may well have disagreed with some of what Cotterill has said recently, and have openly admitted that he his comments, and actions or lack of, have sometimes annoyed but he, and we - the players, club, fans, everyone - got this right on Friday.

There was some fantastic football played at times, with some of the goals top quality in their execution and the build-up - it has to be a toss up between Dave Kitson's 1st goal, in which Dave Nugent played a major role by chasing down the defender, just after his goal, and laying in the Ginger Ninja to lift the ball over the keeper and Mikey Brown's solo effort where he carved his way through the defence - Kitson again played a good role in that goal as pressure saw the ball come to Brown and his side step, knowing he would have been offside, helped Brown weave through before rounding the keeper and scoring.

T'was a good and we most definitely deserved our win, which could have been far greater than it was really. If anyone is going to pick fault in this then you are a hard person to please!

What is important now is that we carry forward this momentum into Tuesday nights game, also at Fratton, against Bristol City - a league win has been long overdue, having got this, and in the manor we did, you would 'hope' that confidence is sky high and we could build on this and grow the momentum even more...

Oh Yes! What a turnup for the books! I wasnt positive enough before the match, lets just hope this is a turning point. I wonder if Jamo was watching on telly? Quaking in his boots before Tuesday night.

I think the Ref helped us a lot with the sending off but that's his fault not pompey's. Putting a couple past Jamo early seems to cause the Robbins to collapse so I'm hoping to see Nugent get on the sheet early, and with a corker. I think the VP match report understates the quality of the rebound finish for his goal, and Nuge had a satisfied look on his mug, I also want to see Slaka get a goal you have to say he deserves it for dare I say it- WORK RATE - did I say that; I did.
