Cotterill's blind rage - but was he right?

I know it is a bit late, but with this, that and the other now is the first chance I have had to look back at the reaction to our 'spanking' at Palace - and it WAS a spanking regardless as to what Steve Cotterill might have said...

Ok, we had a 'few' chances - with our own players sometimes clearing the ball off the line for Palace - and were 'perhaps' denied a goal by an incorrect offside call, I have seen no replays at this point, and 'seemed' to have a goal that was a mile offside given against us - all of which Cotterill has argued - and feels gave the game an unfair reflection, but I am not convinced that he is entirely right: 'there were two decisions that I can't see how the ref and linesman came to them.

'I've just been told Nugent's goal was onside, and two minutes later their goal is blatantly offside.

'They go 2-1 up and have a spring in their step. And before that we were the better team.

'What's the point speaking to the ref? You end up getting fined and they laugh at you so what's the point?'

Again, and as for the penalty near the end - I had completely lost my train of thought, and basically interest in the 'on-the-field' actions, by that point - he felt that it was not a penalty either: 'I've also asked Michael Brown 'was it a penalty, did you touch him'? And he said 'no'

All in all he did not feel that a 4-1 defeat was a fair result: 'and we look like we've come here and had our backsides smacked. No way was that a 4-1!'

I have to say that I probably agree with Cotterill as 4-1 was not a fair result in some ways, it 'probably' should have been 4-0 as our goal was virtually handed to us on a plate - they may as well have scored it for us...

We were totally poor, void of any real idea and - I am not laying into Cotterill unfairly, who I guess he has to say such things as 'it being an unfair reflection of the game' and/or 'we deserved more' his tactical moves, or lack of them, leave plenty to be desired.

I, and to be fair I do not think I am alone as most fans that were also at Selhurst would agree, we were awful and deserved the beating we got!

    Rug; Sadly you are right. The Pen that wasn't clearly was, let's be honest if we hadn't got a decision like that we would be up in arms. Our goal was lucky so I have little or no sympathy for Stevie C, not his fault really, unfortunately I'm afraid that we've had "its all the Refs fault" from Hart and Grant for too long already. What worries mr the mist ( apart from the Cotterillisms) is the failure to accept that he is tactically wrong- that really reminds me of Hart. Otherwise we need to give the man a month to get his team settled. I know managers like Fergie never blame their team publicly; but sometimes the truth is self evident. The great support - trust me it was excellent, groaned at the inevitability of another Kanu start and generally couldn't understand the delay in getting Slaka on; the folly if which was evident after his arrival.

    Ok ok russell, we know how to be patient. But we just cannot have another season of poor football and / or lack of results! Steve needs to do his part too and we just have to start winning!

    I didn't see the game but i listened on the radio, we had 11 chances and scored 1, Palace had 8 and scored 4. Kitson, Nugent, Mullins all missed good chances, Ciftci on at least 2 occasions made bad choices to shoot when there were better options (can put that down to inexperience). It seems that playing Kanu adds a bit going forward, he's the only player with any guile to make something happen. But the midfielders are just not good enough to carry a passenger in defensive situations. It's easy to lay the blame at Steve Cotterills door but the truth is we do not have good enough players to actually win games on any sort of regular basis. Several of the players have the fight but not the ability. The guts of a poor team was ripped out in the summer but now people expect miracles. Until administration is sorted and cash injected we are going to see a lot more of this no matter who the manager is. The only sort of hope Pompey have this season with the current squad is to get 11 players behind the ball and hope for a miracle and that won't be pretty to watch.

    SC... how can you say we dont have the team for it... we do as you yourself show on the stats.. we made the chances and have quality strikers that SHOULD be able to finish them. May be he should play Kanu as a proper attacking midfielder more in the traditional brazilian no.10 role like Harry used to play Merson
