O'Brien loaned to Eastbourne

Nothing has been officially confirmed yet but Liam O'Brien has joined Eastbourne Borough on loan for a month.

O'Brien picked up an injury in training recently, which saw Darryl Flahavan signed on a 1-month contract to act as cover to Jamie Ashdown - this move would 'suggest' that Flahavan is going to be given a longer-term contract soon?

I think that Liam has a really good future ahead of him but fear that he, like so many other youngsters, will be cleared out at the end of the season - if not before, which I think would be a real shame as it is vital that we bring through youngsters.

With all due respect to Eastbourne I would have hoped that we would have at least loaned him to a football league side, but hey ho. Although that said he was going to join Bury earlier in the week but this would not have been as the no.1 so it would not have been any benefit to him, or us.

At the end of the day 1st team football is 1st team football wherever it is!

Yep I know that Steve Cotterill 'should' know best about the kids but he does not 'seem' as though he is a manager that is that keen on giving them that much of a chance, if he can avoid it, and has voiced his opinion on several occasions that the youth set-up is not good enough and we are not producing enough quality...

I believe that O'Brien is out of contract at the end of the season, at this stage I would say it is 50:50 at best that he will get a new contract - it WILL be our loss if we do not look to retain the England U19 keeper.

Totally agree rug - surely he's taking a big gamble alienating the fans in the hope he suceeds which is the only thing that will save his bacon in the next 8 weeks.

actually that IS depressing - looking up Flahavan's record... he's older than me and all his exp is in seriously lower leauge or back up keeper roles.... so to be honest I'd rather not pay his wages... pay o'briens and spend the money somewhere else.
    jim4pompey
He is the England under 19 keeper! Surely that proves he has talent. I have to agree with Jim that I would rather be paying Liams wages. I really hope SC knows what he is doing.

I think this is a good move for O'Brien. I would rather have him playing non-league football than sat on our bench. He needs games somewhere to prove to Cotts that his future is with us.

I'd prefer to see DF go out on loan than Obrien, but if it does have to be the youngster at least make it a relevant team, the man is used to facing good strikers in reserve football, he is an under 19's keeper. That makes him better than non league football.

it says that O'Brien was injured so Flav was signed as cover, surely it makes sense to allow O'Brien to go out on a months loan and regain his fitness rather than risk thrusting him into the first team picture. There are far too many players under performing in the squad already. I think that a short term loan move is not only good for him but good for Pompey. It's just symptomatic of the negativity of fans to read anymore than that into it at the moment.

Fair point Steve C. But you can quite understand the "negativity" of the fans based on what young atlent we've seen leave the club in recent times. Everyone has their opinion and in many people's opinion SC was wrong to let certain youth players go - unless a better reason than them "not being good enough" is explained.
    jim4pompey
plus... Steve C - I'd hardly say it was just the fans negativity... the manager's interviews havent exactly been short of moaning excuses
    jim4pompey
Why is it some of these youngsters (O'Brien, James Hurst) are deemed to be among the best young players in England and representing their country yet we release them ?
    terrymatth
Terry - Steve makes a good point above about O'Brien and we're keeping quite a few... I hear Hurst has a bit of an attitude problem
    jim4pompey
Maybe Terry it says more about the state of young footballers in our country than just at our club. I would love to see some of the youngsters break through but in some ways I t6hink SC may be right, ask too much too soon and we may end up ruining them. young players need to be brought through but it must be done carefully. We should also note that our last few managers haven't seen much to like in the youngsters either or they would have been using them too.
