Pompey bring in Sodje on trial

Pompey bring in Sodje on trial

Steve Cotterill has confirmed, when talking to The News, that Sam Sodje is training with Pompey at the moment: 'we have just brought Sam in to do a bit of training with us and see where he is.

'He's just somebody out there at the moment on a free.'

There is of course no harm whatsoever in looking at the guy, a Nigerian international defender, although would I would be slightly concerned about is the fact that having left Charlton for Greek club Skoda Xanthi in the summer, how come his contract was 'cancelled by mutual consent' after just a month...

We need numbers, but we also need to make sure what we bring in is better than what we already have?

If Sodje is that then so be it, although, and I might be wrong, part of my tends to lean in favour of someone like Joel Ward to act as central defensive cover.

I say this because we know, without a doubt, that the local lad will give 100% whenever called upon and does want to play for us - also, and to be fair, the guy does look a decent prospect, just not as a midfielder!

One player that does NOT want to leave at all though is Matty Ritchie, who yesterday told The News that until he is told by the club they no longer want him he will not leave for anyone.

It is well documented that I am a Ritchie fan, and with that sort of attitude, coupled with a fair amount of ability WHY would we want to let him leave! Although leave is something that Kevin-Prince Boateng does now 'appear' to have done?

His move away from Pompey was a bizarre one - he was joining Genoa, then joining Genoa to be loaned to Milan, yet it is now 'claimed' that he has simply joined Milan for £5.5m and has already started training with them?

We have nothing official yet though...

Although contrary to what one site on t'internet said he WOULD NOT become the first championship player to leave that level for a club such as Milan - Mark Hateley left Fratton for exactly the same move in the 80s, when we were the equivalent to a championship side when we were part of the old second division.

Sodje didn't like Greece, the language, the weather any of it. Nigeria weren't that hot so the main thing is why dud ge leave charlton. Until the embargo is lifted we don't have much in the way of options, we need defensive cover although this bit of news is distinctly underwhelming.

I agree that youngsters like Ritchie and Ward are great prospects and they have risen exceptionally well to the challenge they've been given lately. But there's also a risk of putting too much pressure on them too early on, and SC has said this - so getting in experienced cover can't be a bad thing. In fact for us, bringing players in at all is exciting. And this one has a comedy name - excellent!

    How depressing...........

The fact that he has played for Charlton is exciting. There is no harm in bringing bodies and keep hold of Ciftci, Ward and Ritchie. We need to have subs. We may send them on one-month loans when Hermann and Webber comes back.

Malta; even Charlton fans wouldn't describe it as exciting!!

I meant he has English football expierence penton. Players can come good. Just look at Mokoena. No one wanted him any more at Blackburn. The same happened to Rocha. And mentioning him, does the fact that Sodje is training with us means that Rocha is not going to agree a deal with us?

    Double figure aim for Baker

Goals are in the game of Baker; we've seen this already as the midfielder has scored four for Pompey since his arrival from MK Dons in the summer. His aim is at least 10-goals.
