James and Sonko 'followed their hearts'

James and Sonko 'followed their hearts'

David James has completed his move to Bristol City.

In what will be seen as a 'surprise move' by many the England no.1, although if he still is remains to be seen, has joined our championship rivals - although in all honesty given his, and his families, geographical location this is actually ideal for him.

It is a real shame that a deal could not have been agreed for him to stay here but all good things eventually come to an end - there were 'probably' various factors, on both sides, and it did not work out. How much he wanted to stay, and how much we actually tried to make him stay we will probably never know though...

Good luck to the guy, I sure as hell know we will miss him this season, and as long as he can stay fit he will be worth a shed load of points for them.

So, as one man decides to go to Bristol City another has confirmed that he was also wanted by them but opted for Fratton as he 'had his heart set' on this move - this man being Ibrahima Sonko.

Speaking, to The News, for the first time since joining Pompey he said: 'obviously I was very flattered by Steve Coppell's interest, but in the end I just followed my heart.

'This is a great opportunity for me at Portsmouth and I've been made to feel very welcome by Steve Cotterill and all of his team.

'It's great to be focusing on my football again. This is a very exciting time for me and I can't wait for the new season to begin.

'I see this as a fresh start and I want to make the most of it. I respect the interest the manager has shown in me and the good things he's said about me.

'And I want to reciprocate that out on the pitch.'

We will also be hoping that you can offer us something positive on the pitch Sonko as we need all the help we can get!

The News says that he will play tomorrow, with Kevin-Prince Boateng, Kanu and John Utaka all in the squad too...

Speaking of Utaka the latest move we are trying to make happen for him is to Greece, as part of a swap deal for Giourkas Seitaridis and Veggelis Mantzios.

Although this is not technically a deal we could make really anyway, it is 'said' that Utaka does not want the move to Greece and the Greek internationals are not interested in coming here either - so, basically that kills that one really!

Unless any player, as/when we can sign them, is 100% committed to playing for Pompey we should forget about them sharpish as we need fully committed, fully motivated and fully focused players ONLY at Fratton this season...

Spot on with that last para, Rug. Hussler I think it's been obvious for some time that AA is a closet football manager. It's about time he 'outed' himself and left things to the CEO and SC.

James following his Heart? No his wife stole that which is understandable, and she now wears the trousers so he was not going to celtic in a month of Sundays. His wage bill would have creadted a precidence with other players so he was offered a deal with less money than now, but more money than others with a coaching role added, but his greed got the better of him i feel, hence him swapping 1 championship side for another.

I don't agree Pompeym@, that James was after the money. He's proved that before. The move to Bristol is ideal for him, his family is settled in the west country, and why would he want to uproot them to Scotland, where he could have got a lot more money. He's also had prem interest. Before he came to Pompey he was considering playing in the championship for Plymouth, then he's given us 4 good years and a lot of loyalty for a modern footballer, and he doesn't owe Pompey anything. At least Bristol City know they will have a club at the start of the season. I look forward to seeing him come back to FP with BC, and I know he'll get the excellent reception that he deserves.

Done Deal - Smith in permanently from Swindon

The interest Pompey retained in Smith, with him 'in our sights' has resulted in him returning to the Blues on a permanent basis after signing for an 'undisclosed fee' from Swindon.

Cushioning the blow

Much, that needed saying, about Webster's exit for Ipswich and the arrival of Clarke in return (and cash) has been said hasn't it? Doyle's been spot on with what he said.

Swindon striker in 'Pompey's sights'

Michel Smith, who was of course on loan last season, could return? He's still in 'Pompey's sights' by all accounts after Swindon informed him he's 'surplus to requirements' now.
