Pompey complete Sonko signing

Pompey complete Sonko signing

Fears that Pompey could miss out on Ibrahima Sonko have proved unfounded as his signing on a season long loan from Stoke has been completed.

Steve Cotterill, talking on The Pompey Site, said the following - which I think is what he said in the original article posted when we announced this signing subject to league approval last week: 'he's a big, strong and very powerful defender. I've followed him for a while and I thought he did a fantastic job at Reading.

'He's been a bit unlucky during his time at Stoke and hasn't had too many first-team opportunities, although he did spend time on loan at Hull last season. He just needs to get back playing football.

'We're very thankful to Stoke's chief executive, Tony Scholes, and to Tony Pulis for their help.'

The 29-year-old is in the final year of his contract so 'could' join us on a permanent basis next summer when this expires, assuming we have had our transfer embargo lifted by then! And of course he/we wanted this move...

Bristol City had 'reportedly' also matched this loan move, so with his former Reading manager Steve Coppell the manager of them now we have done well to fend off their interest.

Well I have to say that in an other situation I would have said that I am not impressed, but looking at our squad, or the lack of it, I think that Sonko will be ok, especially in the npower. Good luck Ibra, and welcome home. I hope that you give us something!

If we keep Mokoena and Rocha, our central defenders look pretty solid with the addition of Sonko. Now all we need is some full back cover, a keeper, a few midfielders and a striker or two.

Wasn't the manager complaining about Ashdown getting injured on the trip to the US?
