Pompey's best premier central midfielder was...

Lassana Diarra!

'Lassana Diarra was the best central midfielder that we had during our premier league years', not my vote, yours - although these findings from the forum poll to determine who was our stand out central midfielder during the 7-year stay on the premier league are thoughts I agree with...

The premier league years have brought us many ups and downs and many good and bad players; we focus on the good here though!

All in all, although I voted for Pedro, I do not think that you can dispute that Diarra was among the finest footballers to play for Pompey in recent years, if not the finest footballer to don a Pompey shirt, well perhaps ever let along these premier league years?

The Frenchman would almost always control games almost single handed for us from the midfield and provided that spark to get us going - more often than not when he played well we played well, and he almost always played well! When, the odd occasion came, he did not play so well we struggled.

He genuinely, in an era of 'football mercenaries', did seem to care as he had tears in his eyes as he said his farewell to Pompey fans in the away game at Bolton before his departure a couple of January's ago.

We have had some fantastic central midfielders over the years, especially in recent years so I think it fitting that Pedro Mendes gets a mention - and by being the runner-up in this poll takes his place alongside Diarra in central midfield.

Had it not been for Pedro and 'that match' against Citeh then we would have gone down in 2005/06 and that would have of course meant no FA cup finals, and most definitely no Lassana Diarra etc. anyway, so, although I actually voted for Pedro - maybe the heart ruling the head - it was right that the Frenchman gained top spot but fitting, and just, that Pedro joins him in the middle of the park.

On this day in history...13th February

A look back at this day in history, and what was happening with Pompey courtesy of our sister site PompeyRama, 13th February.

    Big Ben returns!

There's no doubting how important Davies is to us, we most definitely missed the former Sheffield United man against Orient but Cook's confirmed he'll start against Bristol Rovers.

    Winning over the fans

Cook feels he still has to 'win over a proportion' of the fans at Pompey?

Tubbs surprised...in a way he has a point

5-goals in a combined total of 8-matches isn't a bad return is it so having made his move to Eastleigh this week I get Tubbs' point at his surprise Cook wasn't selecting him.
