'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Pompey given 'special dispensation' for transfers

Pompey's transfer embargo has been lifted, well not lifted, but amended slightly with the football league giving us a 'case by case' dispensation to bring in some players, as a football league spokesman told The News.

Although 'reducing our wage bill' is also something that the football league is helping us with apparently: 'the Football League is working with the club to help it reduce its wage bill.

'As part of this process, it has given the club permission to bring in replacement players on a case-by-case basis.'

We all know this apparent 20-squad rule, right?

As our squad has dipped below 20, with it standing at 17, we have 'special dispensation' to sign up to 3 players.

I would 'guess' that if we did this, clearly with free agents or loans, we could add others when others are sold - that is the 'case by case' basis they refer to I would imagine?

At least we now appear to have it confirmed that we can top up the squad, again I would say, and rightly so, loans and free agents are the only deals we can/will do.

The first arrival will almost certainly be Ibrahima Sonko, who was signed on a season long loan from Stoke last week subject to league approval.

with kingston(i know very doubtful), carlo nash and nicky weaver all free agents im ungratefully disappointed about ashdown. i know he probably deserves his chance but im not convinced. And i understand jordan is injury prone....can we afford to risk a place for our own ledley king?
ruffcider
Well small mercies I suppose. I still think they should let us sign frees and loan players anyway, esp since our act of good faith by getting the initial agreement on the CVA.
tracyc
ruffcidr makes a good point we cannot afford injury prone players if we can only have twenty. Webber and Herman won't be fit for some time yet and if they take two places we will struggle to fill the bench. But at least it is some better news eh!

This is ok news praps Lampitt is a FL mole. ruff and Dave ( that well known southern folk duo) make the point about sick notes and quite frankly ive not been convinced about Ashdown in the PL. No one took him on and if Dave Coles didn't think Ashdown was worth his pay then nor should we. The answer that Champs strikers aren't as good as their PL equivalents doesn't wash; top Champs strikers get snapped up by PL clubs; fact.

Good news. We need an experienced goalie, defender and striker and then get a like-for-like replacement when we manage to sell any of our 'stars'. I don't expect Hermann to be one of the 20 though, Dave.

How about signing a cheque to the taxman instead of signing players? considering spending cash that you don't have got you in this mess.

This is all going to be frustrated again! I have been saying all my life that I don't like Ashdown, but I have decided to shut up since he is going to be our number one. I find a bit stupid that a team that has released you, come calling again because they have no goalie and you sign for it again! There are so many players who have no clubs and they can be great for us. Michael Mifsud, he was good at Coventry; he would come for the cheap; Benjani, he is crying out for a club.... and so on so on...
