Pompey's best premier left midfielder was...

Matty Taylor!

'Super Matty Taylor was the best left midfielder that we had during our premier league years', not my vote, yours - although these findings from the forum poll to determine who was our stand out left midfielder during the 7-year stay on the premier league are thoughts I agree with...

The premier league years have brought us many ups and downs and many good and bad players; we focus on the good here though!

As said on the left back poll, which Matty Taylor also won, I love the guy and was absolutely gutted when we sold him - as I was other players of his 'type', such as Gary O'Neil, Pedro Mendes, Benjani etc. if only we had known, as fans, that it would have, ultimately, been in our best interests to keep players of their stature as opposed to 'going for broke' with the mass arrival of 'superstar names' we had eh?

But hey ho, you cannot change it and in some ways would you really want to...

Whilst Matty went on to have a successful premier league career with Pompey I still think that the injury he sustained between championship winning year and first season in the premier league took something from him - so, as good as he had been and still is, that little something extra was lost. This 'probably' cost him an England career, although it also 'probably' meant we got to keep him when we 'might' not have been able to otherwise?

Yep, all in all Matty was the best left sided player we had in the premier league, oh and did he not score some absolute belters! How more of his goals did not go onto win goals of the months, let along goals of the season, is beyond me.

Although I feel a mention needs to go to Patrik Berger, who I thought was immense for us. I always rated him as a player before he played for us, and this did not change during his time with us. That left foot was like a magic wand!

no-brainer really, right? so, we have matty at left back and left midfield - maybe we should cut out the middleman and just call him a wingback!

Definately gets my vote just for the goal he scored against Everton at Fratton from about 45 yards on the half-volley!. I was lucky enough to be in the Fratton end to see it although when he had hit it, it looked like it was going flying over the Milton end. It was only when I saw the crowd going mental in the milton end I realised he'd actually scored from there, what a belter!!!!!

.... Also you can't forget his penalty against wigan to keep us in the prem, talk about composure!

He was a left back by registration, but since he wasn't that good as left back - and stop kidding yer selves he wasn't, he had to be a midfielder. That goal still lingers, missed it at the game and it didn't record on sky cos of a clash couldn't get to see it until at Bro's house the following day.

Moley - I was in the Milton End that day - belter somehow doesn't do it justice

Pity he fell out with HR and got sold. I don't spose we'll ever know if it was true that Matty called him a 'ginger scummer'.
