Matty Taylor!
'Super Matty Taylor was the best left back that we had during our premier league years', not my vote, yours - although these findings from the forum poll to determine who was our stand out left back during the 7-year stay on the premier league are thoughts I would not entirely agree with...
The premier league years have brought us many ups and downs and many good and bad players; we focus on the good here though!
I loved Matty, in fact I still do, and as far as 'wing backs' go I cannot think or many better than Matty Taylor, at his very best - I know this was a tough call to make as it was not a 'wing back' or 'left back' option but, as much as I like to see the full backs getting forward defenders are, first and foremost, defenders by their very title, and attackers secondly...
The list of names contains SO many quality attacking defenders, who were better suited to wing back play really, but not so many of them were actually 'top class' defenders were they?
Armand Traore and Nadir Belhadj combined on the left, at their very best, was - for me - 'probably' the best left sided pairing that I have seen, and not just in Pompey shirts either!
Although, going by my thoughts on defenders being defenders, even though I think I will alter this slightly when we get to the right back option - perhaps, I had to go for The Herminator as he offered that defensive solidarity and, lets face it, offered so much to the team as a team. He is an inspirational character that leads the side.
Do not get me wrong, as said I love Matty Taylor and I am happy with him being in the best premier league side, I was just torn as to whether or not he was a better left back than The Herminator...
