'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Centre Forward Deal On The Cards

As you heard hear first last week, Portsmouth are intrested in John Hartson.

Milan Mandaric has admitted that Portsmouth are likely to join the race to sign John Hartson. Celtic have apparently accepted a bid in of £500,000 from West Bromwich Albion.

Redknapp signed the Hartson from Arsenal for £3.3 million in 1997.

'I need to clear it with Harry,' Mandaric told the Daily Record.

'He still admires John and if he is interested, we will see if we can bring Hartson to Portsmouth.'

Hartson, who has netted 88 goals in 125 starts at Celtic Park, was shocked on Wednesday after hearing that Celtic had accepted a bid for him.

Blackburn have also been linked with Hartson and the possibility of linking up with his former national coach Mark Hughes and player, Craig Bellamy and Robbie Savage.

Celtic are expected to make life hard for Pompey by demanding more money for the player. People inside the club say the player hasn`t been mentally there since January, this is largely blamed on Portsmouth within the club.

" i have always rated him- he gives100% every game"
millers4eva
thats what we need
lmatthews
imo we need to invest in younger players sure buy hartson but sign a younger style player to him whos like 22 so he has years left in him
pompeyboy
he would be a good signing and would come pretty cheap. i think he can still crack it in the premiership
green giant 12
I think it would be a terrific signing and would be cheap, he's a target man, just what we need
Linvoy#1
Cheap? Not sure his wages would be... Over rated in an over rated team in an awful league IMO!
danonash
Well said ash. My sentiments exactly. He didn't put it in for celtic since jan. Would he do the same for us if unsettled. Bit of a prima donna too. . Boooooooooooooooooo
FEn_100
But he is a proven goal scorer and Harry is known to get the best out of the players he works with

Les, Pompey fans there is something I can do for you, as you wake up and taste coffee for the first time each day, I have read all the English paper football headline stories, in some cases watched for a story for a few hours, I knew that Berbatov had signed for Spurs while England was sleeping because of the actual comments/facts from the German 8.30pm (guessing) sports program. I would like to offer Pompey and Les a basic early morning news round up, I commented on this story 6 1/2 hours ago, its around 12.30 UK time. It can be to an email address or to the site.

A proven goalscorer for how long? Not done a lot in the SPL for the last 2 seasons, and even Steve Lovell is a prolific scorer there.
FEn_100
Hartson did well in Scotland because the quality of the teams up there is crap. He'll do nothing in the Prem.
BigYid
Playing in the SPL is more like playing in Division 1. Apart from Rangers Celtic have no competion. My Granny would even look good playing for Celtic. Over rate and lazy since January's transfer window close Hartson scored twice. His no good and not our answer...
nelson
And how many times did Benjani score after the January transfer window? I think it was half that....
Linvoy#1
But Benjani was playing in the Prem not the crappie park football played North of the Border called the SPL
nelson
My girlfriend is a Scot so I had better not add to Nelson's comments. Apart from Celtic this season you would have to think though that all the others would be hard placed to beat teams like Leeds, Crystal Palace and Preston, all of whom failed to gain entry to one of Europe's elitist groups.
pompeygray
hartson has proven himself in the prem. with arsenal. west ham, wimbledon and coventry, but his best days are behind him and i think we will look for someone younger
paultsmouth
He is a proven goal scorer but so is Gary lineker and Gazza. I wouldn't want either of them up front for us. We need young talent up front that are proven to score goals past todays defenders. The likes of John Terry and Rio Ferdinand weren't around when Hartson was in the prem. We need fast skillfull forwards that aren't going to have a heart attack when they have to run 25 yards.
