Nu start for Dave?

Nu start for Dave?

Dave Nugent, remember him?

Well Steve Cotterill certainly does and knows, as he told The News, that the guy could do a job at this level so he is not ruling out the possibility of him staying at the club: 'I do not know what's going on with David. I've got a bit of catching up to do with plenty of things.

'I need to sit down with him and have a little look at what is happening and what he wants to do. There is no point in writing him off, he's a good footballer.

'David is a good player who can score goals at that level. I'm not going to forget about him, without a shadow of a doubt. I want to meet him and see what the future holds.'

I cannot disagree with Cotterill that Nugent certainly is a player that knows his way around this level of football, this is without a doubt a stage that he can excel on but lets face it the club DO want him out and he DOES want out himself!

As I have said before I always had a lot of time for the guy, until he bit the only hand that was really feeding him - that of the fans.

Managers, and staff did not have any really faith or belief in him, yet us guys from the terraces, on the whole, continued to back and give him support - yep we moaned about him at times, and might have shouted abuse at him (as we would any other player that cocked up) but once he pulled on that blue shirt we backed him.

So, for him to say we 'never gave him a chance' and he would 'prove us wrong' etc. when he joined Burnley was unforgivable, and his lack of class also shown when he admitted to Burnley fans, on their official website and several weeks before the season ended, that he would not sign for them if they went down...

'Super Dave' made it clear he is a premier league player, although at the moment NO ONE seems to be in agreement with him!

I know this, I DO NOT want him going out on loan again though as the club will end up paying most, if not all, of his wages - this is pointless so we might as well keep him if this is the only option we have, yet if we do keep him he WILL have to play to justify his salary. We would then have to hope that he can do the job that he 'should' be able to at this level.

No, I want the guy to go, and hope that we can offload him - cutting off your nose to spite your face and all that might be thought but he is on bloody good money, and image rights, and we need that shifted.

Cotterill also denied 'reports' that a deal had been agreed with Steven Caldwell to bring the Scottish international defender to Fratton after his Burnley contract expired.

Steve Cotterill needs to show him the door first, never wanted to be here, as we all said at the time wanted to go to Everton, but for some mad reason we ended up with him. If we get 2 million we will have done well, over rated and vastly overpaid, out of his depth in the Premiership
23/06/2010 09:35:00
Yep probably ten goals between them!!
23/06/2010 09:36:00
Cotterill is correct in talking to him, but Nugent has failed us, on and off the pitch.

As put by PompeyPimp - a forward line of Nugent, Smith and Webber even is as good as a Championship forward as anyone in the division - all have bags of experience at this level and will do well. Lets not forget, Smithy is a 16 goal a season man at Championship level all on his own.

Ive been waiting on this one for somewhile now as the two are known to be good friends. It's well known Harry never wanted to pay that money for Nugent, he thought £3-4m max, but it was one if those deals that spiralled in it's own momentum and the pressure on the player to perform was too much. He was never worth £6m and couldn't justify it; added to that he was also continually played out of position as at that money he had to be accomodated; so Pompey have a responsibility for his downfall here. Burnely dropped him, for injury, talking to a mate most of their fans feel the injuries are in his head and he has to get over it; is Cotterille the man to do that? Could well be. The fight with Wilson, we turned on Nugent but we knew it was started by Wilson but when your a bad boy you get the tag. I don't think Wilson will stay so that issue is out and whilst I know he is a fans favourite, we won't miss him that much;like it or not Wilson errors cost us more points than administration last season and his error count is high. If Nugent stays I will for one give him full support, he is not a bad player, remember we were in a bidding war with experienced Prem managers like Moyes and Allardyce for him. If he goes then it will be to a newly promoted team; the worst option is a loan.

get rid - i know he has his benefits at this level, and that phrase 'cutting off your nose to spite your face' springs to mind but he does not want to be here and i DO NOT want him here anymore, plus we cannot afford to keep him, it is that simple!
the minute he betrayed, and turned on the fans, was the minute i washed my hands of him...
23/06/2010 10:29:00
all that said i know that 'if' by some chance, a remote one, that he stays i will support him again once he pulls on that blue shirt...
23/06/2010 10:30:00
Rug .. I'm with you 100% on that one .. I supported the bloke for months hoping he woul one day come good.. The moment he went to Burnley he slaggd the club off - We should sell for as much as poss .. but as Russ says the worse option is a loan

Its a good move for Cotterill to have a talk with him, if a future can be worked out for him at the club then we get a decent championship level striker (thats what he is) for free, and thats what we need. I don't see a queue of clubs to buy him. If he starts scoring goals for Pompey then bygones will be bygones very very quickly.
