Pompey's premier years - goalkeepers

Pompey's premier years - goalkeepers

The premier league years are done and dusted now, the second tier of English football awaits us again - not that it holds any fear for me, well many of us really as we have seen it, done it and warn the T-shirt before.

In some ways it is like 'going home' and I must say that part of me is really looking forward to this! I am sick to the back teeth of all the politics and money grabbing mercenaries of the top flight that we have seen, the prima donnas on show for many nations at the world cup this summer continue, for me, to show how the game has changed and where the power really lies.

Do not get me wrong these past 7-years or so as a premier league club have been special and have seen us witness some good, strike that very good footballers turn out for us as well as some, well, lets just say some not so good players...

Sadly most of these top class footballers could not wait to go when the chance came, but hey ho that is modern football for you!

Although who, for you, as we BEGIN our selection process, have been 'the good, the bad and the down right ugly' in the goalkeeping department for us in the premier league years?

Leave some names, and thoughts on these players, below please guys then we can look at compiling a good and bad Pompey 11!

The more names put forward the better the battle can be for the good and the bad of Pompey's last 7-years...

REMEMBER: This is focusing on goalkeepers ONLY at the moment.

PLAY UP POMPEY!

Good: Jamo, Kiely, Hislop, Westerveld, Ashdown(Just for sticking with us!), Bad: Chalkias Can't think of anymore On the whole I think we've been quite lucky with keepers in the Prem apart from Chalkias who was just plain rubbish!

Lets add Wapenaar and Srnicek to the list probably on the bad side.

We've been ok on the keeper front since Coles was put in charge; it's important he stays

Rug, good comment. I am so pleased to be leaving the false world of the Premier League behind and related player power, having just read Terry's latest outburst. Many will not agree, but Hislop for me.

I can't remember Westerveld doing anything of note in between the sticks. The few games he did play he conceded a lot and made a few gaffes. Kiely saw us through some tough times well and Ashdown has been great to have in back-up. Begovic deserves to be number 1 somewhere and Shaka was great to have when first coming to the league. The less said about Chalkias and Wappy the better, and Srnicek didn't really get much of a chance to do anything right or wrong.

... But our out and out star keeper has to be Jamo. Some of the saves he has made for us would have most people think he's one of the best in the world. He's even seemed have cut down of his calamities and thoroughly deserves to be number 1 for the country.

Only ever known Jamo and Begovic. Didn't really think Begovic got a chance with us. Ot he did, but we couldn't afford him. I bet he makes it big. Yes, Ashdown has been in the background and a STAR for him for being so patient. We have been spoilt with Jamo tho. Although I am not so ready to believe, as some of you are, that he wouldn't have left us for floppy chops (or anyone else) if he could have in the bad dark days. So I'm not as enamoured of him as I used to be. But good Goalie? Sure - the best!

I vaguely remember each keeper in our Prem years such as James, Ashdown, Hislop, Begovic, Kiely, Westerveld and who can forget Chalkias who was absolutely awful having many blunders including the one against Southampton in the F.A Cup. As you all know David James has been exceleent for us need I say more. I like Ashdown and hes impressed me anytime hes played for us but he has lacked any first team opportunities within our Premiership years and I respect him for a keeper of his quality to stay number 2 for many years shows such a great attitude. For me the most likeable keeper of the lot was Shaka Hislop and the fact I thought he was a great keeper and I believe that David James was his first true replacement. I dont have many memories of Westervield but I remember him to be decent and Kiely was also a decent keeper I remember him for a game against Newcastle he had a great game.

Match highlights - Pompey 0-1 Orient

Disappointing as it was, you take the rough with the smooth and cannot gloss over things when they aren't so good so here goes with the 1-0 defeat Pompey suffered against Orient.

Simply not good enough!

Call me a moaner, call me a groaner but if you think the performance against Orient was good enough then I think you're wearing blue tinted specs as that was poor from Pompey.
