'If It's Football, It's Vital'

A glowing endorsement of Steve Cotterill

This has been shamelessly taken from a comment posted in the forum by Cheltenham fan Fred_Bassett.

It gives an interesting, personal, insight into Steve Cotterill, who is of course the favourite to be named the next Pompey manager.

For me there a plenty of positives to be taken from these comments and if they are anywhere near to what could really happen, should he get the job, then that will more than do for me to be honest.

Anyway, enough from me, I will hand over to Fred who's thoughts are below...

SC is a tactical genius, he will tighten up the defence, he loves his big target man and route 1 football, but hey it works.. so nothing wrong with that.

He knows how to motivate average players to be good players, to bleed for the club.. and he knows where the good free or cheap players are. Excellent judge of character.. He knows at that first meeting with a potential recruit whether he wants him.. he's looking for the player to want to play for him and the club, not to be there for a pay cheque. If the player needs time to think on a move, he gets 24hrs.. then its on to the next one.. He knows how to motivate, lead and organise a team.. the guy is pretty damn good and this is the job he would relish and has his name all over it... you would have instant success..

If I could make any mgr for Cheltenham in the world, Ferguson, Mourinho, anyone.. I would take Cotterill every time.. but he outgrew us and knew it was time to move on. I believe the Pompey job is what he has been looking for all this time.. hope he gets it.. good luck to you!

LoL. Steves mum clearly luvs him. I think Fred is right Steve C is the favourite and rightly so. Capello isn't frightened of a route1 striker and if we get wins then who cares. If he can match HMRC Harry for wheeler dealer then great; only honestly. For me the point is that Cotterille is known to be an ambitious man and he would only sign if he thought the club would be stable and be able to fund within reason that ambition. His signature would be a message that the club is working it's way back to some form of normality; IF he signs.

Switched off after first sentence as this is the reason i wouldnt want SC in charge. SC is a tactical genius, he will tighten up the defence, he loves his big target man and route 1 football, but hey it works.. so nothing wrong with that Well there is something wrong with this as I dont want to watch ugly football next season. We may have lost many games this season but at least we played attractive football.

We managed attractive footy with Crouch and that was route 7ft 1.

of all the 'realistic' options, i think that cotterill is the best we can hope for - i think that his stats with notts county speak for themselves so who says he cannot play 'route one' but not get results...
however we do it, as much as others will be saying aim higher, our priority is to ensure that we DO NOT drop down another league - so, however we can do this we must do this.

Wasn't Cotterill asked by Redknapp to be his no.2 at Pompey a few years ago? I don't know about tactical genius but effective management on a budget is what we need. Cotterill has plenty of the right experience and, as far as I know, hasn't put any clubs into administration. Perfik

Lampitt and Cotterill, both appear honest people, Pompey in the future could be very different. Now lets seal it with new owners, with the club at heart and Storrie's demise.

From what I've heard about SC he's got the job as far as I'm concerned.

My heart sank when I read this. I don't think the Fratton crowd would tolerate route one football for long. Even though we were relegated, we always tried to pass the ball and play attractive football. If we could have played like Stoke and stayed up I would rather have relegation any time!

Managerial choices never please everybody but at the end of the day whoever is appointed should get the full backing of the Pompey fans. If it's Steve Cotterill then fine, we could do a lot worse and we could all probably name them.

Good point 007 although to be honest I couldn't care if the new owner was SAF provided he had the funds and a plan. He's not is he??????
