'If It's Football, It's Vital'

James is an option

David James has made no secret of his desire to move into coaching or management, and has also previously said that this 'could' come at Pompey - where he has also previously said that he would be interested in continuing his playing career next season.

This chance to continue playing for us has been offered to the veteran, a contract is on the table, he just needs to sign it!

The chance of starting that managerial career with Pompey, and sooner than he might have imaged, 'could' come along now?

Admin Andy has admitted that he will discuss the option of James taking over from Uncle Avram, although he also conceded that the job could come too soon for him: 'I believe David wants to go into management one day, although I'm not sure if this will be too soon for him.

'But he is one of the most articulate guys I have ever met and I shall be discussing the situation with him.'

'If' James was approached and 'if' he agreed ahead of the world cup, surely that would see him as a first player to not only captain a club, but be the player-manager of this club yet still play international football?

I have already said that I think the current coaching staff remaining intact is pretty important, I know that it is not liked but this, for me, seems to be the route we need to take here as these guys know the score with the club completely - they will not be surprised by what will, or will not happen so they will not be expecting too much. They also know the players at the club and will know which youngsters are ready to step up, and the ones to place most trust in.

Making the most of what we have could be vital to our season next time round, as said these guys know best of all the traits of the players we have an 'could' get the best out of them.

This, the appointing from within, especially giving people a 'first crack at management' has not worked before but at the very least looking to make James a player-coach is something I think we should look to do.

That first break has to come somewhere, if it proved to be with us then as much as it is 'a risk,' as it has been in the past, I seriously do not think we have that many options to be that 'picky' or 'choosy' about things to tell the truth. Managers will not be queue around the block for this job will they? Those that are will hardly be quality appointments will the...

I say give him a go, he can do no worse than Adams, and I think he will command a lot of respect from the players, particularly the ones that have played with him before. Still a bit gutted about Avi, but never mind! PTID

Just heard this on the news. I think he would be a good motivator but has he the tactical nous? That's not a criticism - I would like to see him in the role.

Don't we think that when the 'new owner' takes over, he/they would want to appoint a new manager? That would make sense to me. Since when is Admin Andy the King Maker. Jamo if he stays, will have a enough to do on the pitch to worry about wants going on, off it. What's the rush to replace Avram anyway?
storagematt
AA has said it's too soon for Jamo to have the top job. Perhaps player/asst. manager role? Matt I've said before in these forums that AA is acting as the owner and manager - deciding who goes, who stays in all aspects of the club.
PFCblue
I'm glad you said that Blue. The man is a bloody Accountant when all is said and done. Also, I'm a bit confused here. Doesn't jamo need coaching badges and qualifications and things?
Gandor1
I think Jamo has done a few of his badges ? However, As I said in the Uncle Avram replacement Post, James is a very risky option particularly when combined with a very dodgy and probably under par championship squad with a brand new wage cap! Probably better with a proven championship level manager to make the most of what we're gonna have ? I would love to see him progress and be assistant manager in the same way as Tony Adams, but look what happened when he stepped up !!! Don't want us to free-fall straight away. PUP

Jamo has done some badges. I would love him to say, but I am not sure about him as manager, but worth a try! Groves is good to me if he has the required badges.
Pompey Malta
jamo has done some badges, and you don't need as many for the championship as you do the premiership (i think). Personally, I don't want to see him be our manager next season. there are two reasons - firstly, I want t see him as our goalkeeper, and he can't do both, and secondly, I think he needs to spend some time as an assistant or coach underneath someone with real experiance. I think he has the potential to be a great manager, but I also think that in order to be a great manager, you need time as an assitent, then time in the lower leagues.

would of loved niel warnock as manager but he has just join QPR aint he. curbishly we could afford.. paul hart anyone?

James needs two things, Experience and a hairdresser who can say NO.

Agree with you carps. I think Jamo will be a fab manager one day,but he's not ready yet. To give him the job now would be to set him up to fail, and he deserves better than that. He hasn't finished playing yet and I want him to be our goalie for a few more years yet. And then it would be great if he could stay at the club to be eased into the coaching/management role, although he will probably need some experience (to make his mistakes) somewhere else for a bit first. In the meantime . . if you want a gamble, lets take Kevin Dillon!
tracyc
but rather have Jamo than Dowie
hammersmithblue
I am very interested in this! hope Jamo thinks it over
nodster
If he does take the job I will be right behind him and it would be an exciting gamble that I would hope pays off. It's just if it doesn't work, he could go from hero to zero in a few months, and it would be a great shame.

In all honesty i said to my wife before Uncle left, I said Jamo, or Ediie howe at AFCB...when isaw al the usual unemplyed suspects wheeled out for the bookie odds i was'nt surprised....except fot the FAT UGLY SCUMMER at Hull....Now Mr Dillon is mentioned-did any one see Alan Knight on the Aldershot bench...any of these would be fine..although i would plump for Howe first, Jamo second and KD 3rd...Howe witrh jamo??? not sure how the egos would work out..Jamo on his own with an experiance No 2 would attract players and he is high profile... For Me ..Ediie Howe.. Please no ex scummers in ant capacity...... Just as an aside ...How does AA already become such an expert on Football ( not buisness, i accept) to say that its too soon for Jamo...AA is starting to iritate me a little ..and he continually bad mouths the only guy realistically interested in buying the club
plymouth graham
Wouldn't mind seeing Alan McLoughlin involved somewhere, he speaks alot of sense about the game of football! Kevin Dillon hmmm, sounds interesting! PUP
