Heartbreak for Hughesy

All in all there is little room for sentiment in football these days, well basically in the majority of all walks of life, but one of those that deserved some involvement in the cup final squad was surely Richard Hughes.

Yep, I know Hughesy is far from being the best footballer that this club has seen, let along football in general, but few give as much as the Scot does - so for him to be faced with the heartbreak of missing another cup final is cruel...

In all honesty he 'probably', if the majority of options available were available, would not have made the starting 11 to face Chelski, although a place in the 18-man squad would have been nailed on, right?

Yet, sadly, this looks like it will be taken away from him due to a hamstring injury picked up at the weekend.

As said the guy is far from being the best footballer around, yet he knows what his strengths are and plays to them - likewise he knows his limitations and steers away from 'trying' too much.

He has never moaned when he has not been selected over all the years he has been with us, he just keeps his head down and gets on with it. Yet we know that when called up he will always do a job and never let us down - Scotland must have an embarrassment of riches to constantly overlook him for international involvement though!

Hughesy has been playing with a hernia problem, delaying this operation until the summer to help see us through the season and have a chance at the cup final dream - having missed the last one as he was not selected in the squad - but it seems this has been taken from him, and I am gutted for the guy...

Like you say Rug he probably wouldn't have made the starting 11 if most of our squad was fit, but since it isn't and theres always the bench I'm sure he would have played some part during the game. I reckon he'll be here next season with the herminator but Finnan and Utaka I'm not sure about. It all depends on whether someone buys us or not?

Let's face it he's not the best footballer to play at fratton, but he's been at the club for a long time now and for him to miss a second final is gutting

A genuine shame, not surprised at his angst, he won't get another chance - football can be very cruel sometimes. A 100% player - I don't think he would've been in the starting XI either, but would probably have been on the bench, and maybe would've come on. Glad he played in the semi, even if only for a couple of minutes. Feel for you Hughesy, and I 4-1 would be glad to see you as part of the squad next season.

Watched him on sat on his knees with his head in his hands and took me a while to work out what was going on in his mind. BUT although this is well gutting, don't forget he did get to play Milan. Still, not sure that's much consolation at the mo. Hope he stays next year.

Hughsey has been something of a warrior at our club, I admire him massively for staying as long as he has with such long periods without getting in the playing 11, He knows exactly what he is about and what job he can do, he will always give a 100% and quite frankly a lot of players could learn a thing or two about him, I am a little gutted on his behalf and wish him a speedy recovery, and I too hope he is on the squad sheet next year.

A good write up on him Rug. He's always been a willing 'work horse' for us and I, too, feel gutted for him.

Feel for hughsey. As Hammersmith said soon as he went to his knees you knew that he was out.

You can't fault his effort and attitude. Someone who the youngsters can learn from. It was sad to see.

Unlucky Hughes. He deserves to be at least on the team, for his loyalty towards the club!

We won't see him in the Cup but I believe we will see him as one of the mainstays of next season.

I know he's had his critics, but I've always liked Hughesie, and especially so against manyoo of all teams. After his solid dedication to the club, I'm really gutted for him missing out the second time round.
