European dream not over yet? - UPDATE!

I just got a text saying 'uefa rejected our European appeal', when I asked where this came from I was told it shows up on the BBC Sport page.

Sure enough, on the 'yellow bar' is says: 'Portsmouth will not play in Europa League next season after Uefa dismisses their appeal.'

Although that is as much as it does say for now.

More, I am sure, will follow...

This has now been confirmed with a 'joint statement from the FA and Premier League' saying they have agreed 'between them' that our late application is not going to be approved.

It said: 'the FA and Premier League have confirmed to the administrators of Portsmouth Football Club that they shall not consider any late application for granting of a Uefa Club Licence for the 2010-11 season.'

I am disappointed, bitterely disappointed at this as, and I know this club is in a mess and not everyone can be blamed for everything else or the 'it is not fair' approach taken to everything, although I have little doubt had this 'late application' been for 'a bigger club' if would not have been rejected...

Once again the failings of previous owners, who would have been exposed sooner than they were had they applied - with the 'books' having to go to the premier league and FA - have cost us, and although this would have cost us money to be involved I do think that this will now 'cost' us, maybe not financially but in terms of how we can start to regroup and redevelop as a club.

Yep, we missed that 'self imposed' deadline from the FA and premier league - NOT that I think this should have anything to do with the premier league as this is the FA cup we 'could have' gained entry via - but the uefa deadline is May, so surely they should have had the final say, it appears they did not?

I can appreciate that a decision needed to be made fairly soon and if we did not come out of administration or have our CVA approved I would have had little problem accepting this, but not evenning having this chance to see if we can do this disappoints me...

Admin Andy has told The News that the fight to gain entry into Europe next season is STILL ON...

No application has officially been made so rejecting it has surprised him: 'we've earned the right to play in Europe.

'I find the comments unusual considering our application has not gone in yet.

'We are still in the process of complying and providing all the information required for us to apply to them.

'I've not spoken to anybody regarding this. We put in a preliminary application and they came back and said "just make an application". Our lawyers are handling the application.

'They (the FA and Premier League) have asked us for strict criteria and we are still looking into that.

'We've earned the right to play in Europe so we will make the application, albeit belated.'

This official approach will be made next week although I think it is pretty clear which side of the fence the FA and premier league are sitting on here...

The FA had/have the chance to prove that THEY have the power in English football, by rolling over and releasing an FA CUP PLACE to the premier league they confirm what I think we all know, the real 'muscle' in the English game is, worrying so, with the premier league!

As above 'if' we come out of admin and have our CVA approved I see NO REASON to prevent us entry, can uefa not step in and have the deciding vote on this - afterall it IS a uefa competition, right?

It's the FA and PL who have turned us down not UEFA - A joint statement from the FA and Premier League said: 'The FA and Premier League have confirmed to the administrators of Portsmouth Football Club that they shall not consider any late application for granting of a UEFA Club Licence for the 2010-11 season.'

Yes, quite gutted when I saw the headline. No doubt little sympathy or flexability from Uefa or the FA. Just think Liverpool could nick our European place!!!

Even worse Matt it could be Everton!!!

Didn't think for one minute that they would ever allow us to apply late.. now if we were Liverpool or Manchester United ...

exactly, with it now 'possible' that the 'golden boys of liverpool' might miss europe altogether we had no chance...
the last time i checked though it was the fa cup not the premier league cup so what the hell has it got to do with the premier league anyway!
this, for me, just proves where the real 'power' in english football lies - it is NOT with the FA, and that is ONLY going to make things worse in the english game, sod it we may as well let the premier league run the english game as the vitually do anyway!

I disagree with your first statement Rug, but the rest is spot on. Money rules, ok!

With regard to your UPDATE Rug I'm torn between not letting UEFA interfere with our leagues and UEFA standing rules. But if it's the case that the home country's ruling body must grant a licence before any club applies for an UEFA licence then I guess that the FA and PL have made the right decision in the light of our financial plight. It would seem that any such application doesn't go direct to UEFA.

I for one am really sorry for you guys. You've had a nightmare of a season, and hopefully your FA cup adventure will end up nicely with a win against Chelsea! As a Villa fan, I am quite relieved that 7th spot guarantees european football as it would have been a shame not to qualify for european competition after our good season. But I agree that the FA and PL have done all the could so that everything's going in Liverpool's way...and I hate it :( Please beat Chelsea in the final to remind the FA and PL that there are more than 4 clubs in English football! Go Pompey!

I'm not too disappointed as I expected this stance and also voiced my concerns a while ago that it would be a costly exercise we just can't afford. The only bit that really upsets me is that the place will go to another team that hasn't earned the right to go. I'd rather it went to no-one than those bleating about how we "don't deserve it" because let's face it, anyone finishing 4th won't deserve it either!

I agree with pastyman that in our reduced circumstances next season in the Championship, we would be unable to mount a serious European campaign. Indeed it could detract from the main priority - to get back into the Premier League. Nevertheless it is a nasty, vindictive piece of bureaucracy by the PL/FA. In most walks of life, if you miss a deadline for a good reason, you are allowed to make a late submission - e.g. if you are ill on the relevant date. In this case we were not able to make the submission because we were in administration. If we come out of administration before the UEFA deadline, any normal organisation would accept a late registration. This is just a pretext for kicking us when we are down. The PL/FA deserve nothing but contempt for their bullying action.

I was half expecting this. I'm annoyed because I agree with Rug this is favourtism, especially to Liverpool. It would have been great to have had another European Tour, but it's not to be. Then again, its also true it would have put us under a lot of financial pressure, and pressure in terms of extra games on top of the extra games in the power league anyway - on a squad which is likely to still be reduced, so it may be for the best. Let's just win that gleaming silver cup on May 15th and stick 2 fingers up to the lot of them!

It stinks! These guidelines uphold the rules, yesm, but in the case like Pompey's this is just another kick in the teeth for the finances and the future. Talk about letting a persecution complext develop....

Im not going to rant off the first 30 to 40 words that came to my mind, but instaead try to put something usefull done in words.
I can understand the 'tax law' late application rule that the PL and FA want to slap down on us. After all, we are now to be the example of the Premier League on how not to be run (even if every club is the same). Surely though if UEFA have agreed to us entering? Did I miss read that somewhere? (albiet by certain contraints), These rules should be held? Since when has an individual national ahd power over the Europeam Uninon. Similar sitaution me thinks.
As to squad size, when clubs from Eastern Europe and even Wales or Northern Ireland look to the Europa League as there Golden Chalice how are we to complain about squad depth and talent?

Surely this is a stupid decision not to let Pompey earn money from a European compettition, are they saying that any club that enters this compettion will lose money?

Did anyone really think the premier league or FA would be on our side? The PL is as liable for the crooks we have had in charge over the last year as anyone, can't see them admitting that either!

My question to the PL & FA is by punishing the club who are you really punishing. All the people who have caused the problem are gone, your punishment does not affect them one iota, so why do it, it seems a spiteful act of a bully. Fit & proper my 4rse.

I doubt whether it's being used as a lifeline for Liverpool per se, probably more a case of keeping the spot open for any PL team. How come the PL have a say in it anyway? Surely this is between us, the FA and UEFA? The FA Cup winners/runners-up have nothing to do with the PL.
