'If It's Football, It's Vital'

99 not out...

The '£1m payment' from Boro to Pompey that will be triggered by Gary O'Neil playing another game for Boro, his 100th, has seen various thoughts shared at the weekend.

To be honest I still find our 'high and mighty' stance at them potentially not 'honouring' a payment to us somewhat ironic, given the actions of those 'running' our club over the years - even if I do agree that Boro should pay up if they owe it, then again so should we have...

He was left out of their squad yesterday, initially with 'injury' being claimed although they have since admitted that that is not the case and 'hinted' that he might not play for the club again this season, if at all - which has left his agent LESS than impressed.

Boro reacted to the administrators stance by saying they would 'honour all payments to Portsmouth,' although clearly if Boro are leaving him out for 'business reasons' you would think they cannot afford this payment?

It is not right, but in many ways this is what is SO wrong with football these days really! If only it was as straight forwards as 'agreeing a fee and paying that fee', instead of having various add-ons and clauses etc. written in.

If only fees were also agreed and paid in full, or at least something like 75% paid up top, it would also, I feel, make football run much smoother, and I dare say it see prices paid, and wages offered, drop because you would not be able to 'spread the costs' - then 'maybe' see the prices we have to pay also fall, but hey ho what do us mere 'football fans' know about anything...

Quite clearly this issue looks like dragging on for sometime with it unlikely to go away until a 'compromise' is reached, which sadly will leave O'Neil as the big loser in all this as he, who I know is someone that 'only wants to play football' will not be able to do this.

Good points Rug, the whole transfer system needs surgery.

It has been a farce since the transfer window came into it. Back in the day you payed full or you signed no one. None of this league games nonsense, or goal based rubbish. It's not only fees that are ridiculous, but that the governing body allowing chairmen to spend more then they have and plunge the very existence of a club into question, a fate all too well known by you pompey fans I am sure..

Tit for tat ... I'm sure Lens would feel we are being a bit hypocritical
Chix
Right there Chixy - kettle and pot come to mind.

looks like they are just gonna sell him in the summer .. joke really because hes their club captain and been their best player this season. will be hard to sell him for the right price though because they cant really hold out for more because every club now knows they have to sell him its like trying to sell someone with 6months left on thier contract... pompeys first signing of the summer what u think...

A system where you buy a player, and pay for them straight away can do no wrong. But like buying a club, like the offside rule, it has been given all this complicated variations that only a few can understand, and because less people understand it, those who do can use that to their advantage to find loopholes to not pay the money they rightfully should. Keep it simple is what I say.

No kettles or pots we have been heading towards admin for the last couple of years, it was always going to happen whether we knew it or not, thats the reason we have been postponing payments in recent years. Boro are a far better run club from all angles, and i believe they are just trying it on or they want rid of him, either way I hope we don't give in for a 'quick buck' and let them have to get rid. Is it worth letting them off 'the hook' for a couple of grand, but we coud possibly renegotiate for the same money on a later sell on clause.
Super Bock 1898
Another case of kicking us while we're down. We need the money to help get out of admin before next season. Tit for tat? We couldn't pay Lens, Boro can pay but choose not to. I have no sympathy for them.

I think O"Neill and O"Hara would be a great centre midfield pairing, hope we can get the new owners in and spend about 6 million on the pair of them
JASON R
u would need 6 just for ohara then another 3 for oniel
pompeyhussler
If Boro can't afford the payment it could cost a bit less than expected. Even O'hara could cost less than you think if he isn't going to make it at Spurs.
SFC Forever
these stupid contracts we made with other clubs will probably go on for a few more years.. Yakubus 150th goal for everton, matt taylors 20th hair style at bolton
nodster
Good one nodster. O'Hara won't play in the Championship. I'll bet a top 6 PL team will go sniffing around. I f we had to have both O'Neil and Jamie in the middle and Wilson behind them, than that will be very good. But I really doubt that. O'Neil might come yes, he has played in Championship this season so it won't matter to do it again!
