Roy of the Rovers stuff...

I am, as most of you know, not really one of those people that EVER goes to a game expecting to be beaten - regardless as to what is happening I maintain those thoughts that 'it is not worth bothering' if you think that way...

Granted, football for me has almost always been more about the 'whole day' and how I can spend this with my friends, these are magical most the time. The passion for football has been lost somewhat in recent times, due to events 'off-the-field' and premier league 'global domination', although I cannot say I have lost that passion to do the travelling and enjoying the day - even if it can be a long and tiring process sometimes. It is NEVER a chore though when I am spending it with my friends!

The trip to Spurs yesterday was another fantastic one, with good times had by all - it was just a shame that so much of the 1st half was wasted on overzealous stewarding, and police involvement - totally unnecessary and technically not something that should be happening, as 'standing', or 'not sitting' is not an area for them to get involved in - throughout so much of that half which detracted from the enjoyment somewhat...

In all honesty, in spite of my usually feeling - as mentioned above - I DID fear a spanking, I cannot lie!

So, in many ways was pleasantly surprised, and to be honest whilst it was not a great game, and I suspect Spurs have several more gears to go up, we did have a couple of chances and 2-0 was not a 'bad' result really was it. I was disappointed in Crouchy for celebrating his goal; really disappointed yet 'surprised' that Kranjcar did not! He was the one I would have, from the pair, expected to do this, so hats off to him for that one.

Hats off also to the Pompey players again though as they gave everything, once again. Yep I think we ALL know now that the quality is lacking but I still like this squad we have in place - I was disappointed that no one came over to the fans though at the end, many applauded as they went off - including Younes, who came on for Spurs, yet none came over, and this is something that I almost expect really, so it saddens me when it does not...

It seems like EVERYTHING is conspiring against us at the moment, right?

Rocha John Rocha and Tommy Smith stretchered off in midweek, ok maybe Smithy was not stretched off. The Herminator and Danny Webber suffering similar fates at White Hart Lane, not forgetting that David James had to come off as well - leaving us with 10-men for the closing minutes REALLY does leave us 'down to the bare bones'...

Rocha John Rocha 'should' be ok, I would think Smithy is out, The Herminator is out without a doubt, which I find gutting. His Achilles is snapped, and part of me thinks his career is over too - though I hope not, and it did not look good for Webber. As for James, well I say wrap him in cotton wool for 2 weeks!

We had 3 'kids' on the bench yesterday, the problem is it is my understanding that even though further youngsters we have at the club are Portsmouth footballers because they have not been 'registered' as 'professionals' they cannot even be drafted into the squad because we CANNOT register any new players...

Like I say, it seems as though everything is conspiring against us for the semi final!

Yet, and as Ken and I discussed yesterday, you - well we, cannot help but still think, or is it hope, something is still set up for a real 'Roy of the Rovers' type scenario where, despite everything that has happened this season and despite the mounting injuries crisis that is stretching an already threadbare squad to breaking point that 'it is meant to be'...

It was strange that both the semi finals were mirrored with the league fixtures on the same weekend, and both sides that will be fancied both won in the league - and Chelski absolutely spanked Villa 7-1 - yet you, although I should say I, cannot help but think it is set-up for both sides to win the 'real games' in the semi final to set up a Pompey v Villa final?

True 'fairytale' stuff would see us beat Spurs and then play, and beat, Chelski in the final really.

Although with our premier league stay coming to an end, and in all honesty I cannot say that I am overly sorry to see this, is seems almost 'fitting' that we should end our time as a premier league club against the side that it began against, Villa! Afterall, who will ever forget that Saturday lunchtime when we played our 'first' top-flight game in the premier league? That was of course against Villa, and we won...

I think anything is possible on the day Rug. The game yesterday, again for 20 mins we held our own then it looked like we would cave in again. However even with players dropping like flies we showed some good passing and made attempts to get back into the game. We know our side lacks certain quality but they have shown great character and effort. My hopeful prediction that yesterdays winners won,t make the final. Pompey v Villa

Fairplay to Niko for not celebrating the goal - it was appreciated. It did occur to me a week or so ago, when I was thinking about the Fulham/Spurs replay, that much as I wanted Fulham, that was not the script for our cup run this season. The script is, despite everything that's going on, or perhaps fired up by it, Pompey beat both of their bitter rivals in this year's FA cup and go on to win with their rag-tag band of players. Its the stuff fairytales are made of.

On MOTD they were reminding Hansen of the time when Liverpool thrashed Crystal Palace (I think it was 9) just before they played them in a semi-final, which Palace won. History bears well for a Pompey/Villa final!

good article but i've lost belief in miracles now. I hope Grant gets his win, he has been dignified - Uhhum mostly.

I just can't believe our luck. Feel so sorry for Herman as well. Have just been on the Spurs site and just cannot get used to the kind words and sympathy for us. Its just not natural. Never mind - our little rag tag and bobtail crew might just do it on the day! PUP! Good toast again Dave.

Fairytales nah.. I just can't see Al Fahim and Al Fahaj as the ugly sisters and Redknapp as Baron Von Trapopen..but then again... Pompeyrella or Sleeping Giant does have a ring to it ..
