Wilson called-up by Ireland

It has seemed like good news has been at a premium for Pompey for some time - we get the odd 'snippet' here and there, but more often than not this comes to nothing anyway.

Although, and for me this is good news - even though I am sure there will be a fair amount of negativity surrounding it, which is fair enough as we all have opinions - Marc Wilson has gained his first call-up for Ireland.

He has been named in the squad to face Brazil on March 2nd - and to be fair Giovanni Trapattoni has been around the block a few times so the Wilson cannot be all bad can he!

Yep Wilson has made mistakes, an yep he might not have always learned from them but he has been well and truly thrown in at the deep end this season and I think, assuming we do come through ok as a club and we do not look to offload him, he will gain from this. I am still not convinced he is a central defender though - I feel with his footballing ability and range of passing, which is good, he would be better suited as a defensive midfielder really.

For me, in a season full of lows, I would say the emergence of Wilson - even if it has been more out of necessity - has, overall, been one of the few high(ish) points to be honest...

I'm not a big fan, but good luck to the lad, he's battled hard without complaining.

I like him a lot (though one too many Johan Cruyff turns for my liking) and I think it's deserved. Well done Marc

i think we all know i like the guy, and i know tony knows i do - i said to you at the weekend, as i did above, that overall he has been one of the few pluses - inspite of some costly errors - this season, nice one marc!

Easy to pick on the lad. He is young, learning his trade & will get better. He has been thrown in at the deep end in the mother of all bad seasons. There are other older, more experienced players who also need their a55e5 kicking. On a cynical note, it could increase his sell on value.

I think Marc Wilson is pants. The only reason he's anywhere near our first team is because there's nobody else to put in there! Awful against Scum, Terrible against Stoke, and no doubt will be diabolical on the international stage. Hate to say it Mr Wilson, but enjoy it whilst you can because you'll never get anywhere near the Premiership EVER AGAIN. Stop saying that he's young etc - he's 22, there are younger, better defenders out there, if he was going to mature into something resembling a decent footballer then he would've by now.

I totally disagree with you Gino. Wilson is good enough to be in the squad. Far better than Ben Haim, who is supposed to have experience! Well done Marc, you will do fine!

I know a lot of people will disagree with me. I don't think he is good enough. He's naive as hell and against Stoke too many balls were left to bounce on the edge of the area. In my opinion Hermann wasn't very good against them, but his good performances outweigh his bad ones. Wilson gets in a few good tackles - but the law of probability says that he will put in a good tackle at some point - nowhere near enough in my opinion. And to be honest Ben-Haim isn't good enough either! None of the defence are, it's our weak link! I think I've finally snapped, I really do. Ever since I left FP after the Stoke game I've been one angry man.
