James deal called off

David James' proposed move to Stoke has fallen through after Stoke 'pulled the plug' on the deal after failing to reach an agreement with us by a certain time and over certain issues...

Stoke wanted to conclude the deal by midday today so he could feature for them against Liverpool tomorrow but as this did not happen they have said that the deal is off!

It is also 'thought' that as they wanted us to pay half his wages, something that we are thought to have disagreed on, with us having stood our ground on this issue this was also a factor in the deal falling through.

What happens next for James remains unknown...

We wont play him if rumours are true about triggering a new deal? He wont get into world cup if he doesnt play? S i assume its what he wants more? World cup or money? else he could have done a deal to mutually agree to terminate contract and negotiate a lower wage elsewhere? Money wins then i assume?

Interesting, if he plays for us then we have to offer a new contract and if he sits on the bench then Fabio wont select for the WC. He's got to find another taker in Jan or could be a long boring season for him.

If they wanted us to pay half his wages then i am not surprised the deal was not completed and the transfer embargo is still not lifted!!! and we may have to wait another two to three months for investors. I think we will be going down this season and will have to rebuild when we are in the championship. James is going to feel not wanted now, and kaboul will be off soon so we can get this embargo lifted and then hopefully someone can wave a magic wand and tranfer money becomes available.

Don't think he will play for us again this season if then new contract rumours are true, the Stoke move would of been good for him but looks like he has to hang around Pompey for the rest of the season.

Finally someone at Portsmouth has finally got the balls to stand their ground and say no to being pimped. Well done pfc.

nice for us to stand our ground for once. We seem to be too much of a push overs sometimes. We especially need to show a strong stance in our precarious position or else we'll be selling Kaboul for a tenner!

Sounds like they tried to hold us to ransom, stuff 'em. From what I read earlier, Jamo has played 12 and 20 would trigger a new deal? So he might play for us again....unlikely though.

They'll be back I think. Looks like their No 1 Sorensen is keen on a deal out of there, play hard ball Pompey, in fact, make them pay a fee (or sell him) and make them pay the full whack !!! James will want to play regular footy so up to him also to drop his wage demands. Funny the hipocrasy in all this, and DJ talking about unreasonable wage demands etc....Whats more important Jamo WORLD CUP PLACE or LOADSA WONGA ??? Time will tell. Well done PFC stand firm !! PUP

A while ago I would have been ecstatic to hear this news but now I am not sure. Good on Pompey not to roll over though.

If what we're hearing is true, the obvious solution for him would be to waiver his automatic right to a new contract. That way he can [potentially] get his place back in the side and we're realistically no worse off than we are now. If we want to get rid of anyone on load and continue to pay half their wages i'd suggest Utaka as it would allegedly be a greater saving.

If James is on 50k per week, thats 200k every 4 weeks, which 2.6m per year. Makes good sense to NOT want to give him another year, as he is no spring chicken anymore. With the rest of this season to go, and the 2.6m its probably worth 3m in savings if we offload him, so probably the reason we didnt ask for a fee? And with the eages we could save if someone else buys him or takes on his full wage, it could be enough to satisfy Prem League by diverting them wages to the other debts? I think we should stand our ground, well done Pompey, but James could be in the driving seat and by terminating his contract everyones a winner.

well if he really wants to play in the world cup he could always expect a new contract with us for the rest of the season for less money... haha or we could mutually terminate

spurs !!!!!!!!!!!

i still feel that the spurs board will not sanction the move, they will not justify paying a 39-year-old as much as 50,000 per week - to possibly sit on the bench will they? if we would not split with stoke, why should we split with spurs?
it will be interesting to see what happens next and 'if' all parties do want out surely the best thing for jamo to do, if he wants to go to the world cup, if to agree to teminate his deal and then take a big pay-cut elsewhere? altho, and i never had jamo down as this type, it seems it could well come down to money perhaps?

Good that we stood our ground the irony being we can't really afford it. If there is another contract clause (nice work again Mr Storrie) then Jamo will have to get on that phone won't he; I trust we will still play AB in goal tomorrow, form and loyalty should be rewarded.

why dont stoke just buy him for 500k rather than a 500k loan fee then offer him lower wages ! if he rejects it then that means he dosent want to go to the world cup.

You stood your ground?! If you hadn't signed him (and a few others) on such high wages in the first place you may not have been in this sorry situation. At least we stood our ground and refused to break our wage structure - is there a lesson there for Pompey? Having said that the main one likely to suffer is James himself. He could have swallowed his pride and taken a drop in salary and/or negotiated an end to his contract and it would have been a done deal.

Yes stafford we stood our ground. You wanted a world class England international for next to nothing - and I was appalled when I thought Pompey had done that deal, and pleased they had the balls to say no. If you want him you have to pay for him. And thanks for the history lesson on our club - yes we know that very well thanks, its one reason we're going on a protest march today. OK rant over, I'm now going to post was I was going to say . . .

What I was going to say was . . . I was sorry to think he had left, although I do understand it may have to happen, and I do rate young Begovic very highly. Now he hasn't gone yet, there's still the question of the automatic contract, which means he probably won't play. But perhaps someone else will still come in for him, he is still England's no.1 and a great keeper. Pity he can't waive the automatic contract thingy and stay here.

Thank god we stood our ground over somebody at last! James has been worth his money (whether we coiuld afford it or not) and I hope we can work a deal out with someone that benefits both parties. If not, I imagine someone will get a good deal on him but there is still time and Stoke's offer can wait
