Wages late YET again

For a 3rd time this season, and a 3rd in 4-months Pompey have FAILED to pay the players, and staff, well at least on time - previously this was paid, but paid late so I can only assume that the same will happen again...

They are 'expected' to be paid on Tuesday with a statement issued saying: 'Portsmouth Football Club expect to pay their first-team squad's December salaries on Tuesday, January 5.

'The club has been speaking to the Professional Footballers' Association and the players have been informed.

'The club has been assured of receipt of funds by Tuesday and the owner and board have been working hard on resolving the short-term delay.'

It is NOT just the players that have not been paid there are other 'non-playing' staff members, people who I suspect cannot afford to be without this money, that have not been paid as well with an 'error' causing this delay...

A further statement, from a spokesman, told The News: 'the problem was due to a file not being loaded properly at the bank. It wasn't processed properly.

'The club apologise and if there are any knock-on effects financially for employees the club will reimburse them.'

Before anyone says it, yep it might not be on The Pompey Site but these ARE official statements - and it is true payments, players and staff go through on different payrolls, have not gone through on time. I have chased this up and not ALL official statements made are released through the official site...

Players and staff were said to be aware of this before it came to the public light.

Ok, perhaps they WILL be paid at some point - as they have previously - but it IS a basic necessity that wages are paid, and paid on time despite other financial problems. Other messes we are in might be down to other people buy paying the wages is NOW down to those in charge, so not doing this on time once was 'unfortunate', twice 'shameful' a third time is just plain 'unacceptable,' right?

Is there anyway to defend this? Can you defend the indefensible - I know some will say they have eventually been paid, but they SHOULD be paid on time...

Yes of course people should be paid on time. People go to work because they need to earn money. Their finances are organised around receiving their money on a certain day. There are people who will now have defaulted on their mortgages at least twice, maybe three times in the last four months. This sort of thing goes down on their credit record, I believe. I employed up to 16 staff for over 20 years and was never ever late with wages. It was unthinkable.

Can't defend it - For the players it is hardly the end of the world .. It's the non playing staff I have real sympathy for. Hopefully 2010 will bring some good news to Pompey.

not surprised.

Each time they've had ample time to make sure the funds are there. For me it's another indication of the dire straits the clubs in. Obviously neither of the F's are willing to put their own money into the club, and what outside money man is going to invest into a dying business? You don't throw good money after bad. I'm afraid that bankruptcy is looming ever larger.

Not suprised, but disappointed. I wish they'd stop blaming bank errors. Whenever we try to imagine that the situation isn't really all that bad, as the club try to tell us it isn't, things like this rear up and show that it is.

How much worse can things get? It's so hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel when we're told next to nothing of any value by the club.
Tantona
No surprise, was expecting this to happen again!

totally unacceptable.

I wish they'd all **** off and let the club go into administration. Gaydamak would then lose all his assets, Storrie would be off the payroll and the rest of the cheating P R I C K S would leave our shores with nothing. Time to rebuild the club again from the bottom, with the fans being in control. Can't we be the first team in England to use Barcelona's business model?
stillthewhizz
do we have enough £££ to do that?

if you were a lower league club, it would be asked for the PFA to loan you the money in the short term, but with such high figures for the prem clubs it would bankrupt the organisation. I think there has to be lessons learnt from the Pompey struggle this season, but as usual I think the ruling bodies will just try to get is over with as quickly as possible regardless of what eventually happens to Pompey.
