Growing in stature

After being selected the man of the match against Chelski, I said the following about Asmir Begovic: 'once again the Bosnian came in, and again against a top-class side, did not look out of place in the slightest.

'He seems to have good control over his defence, with a good rapport with them as well, which always helps. His reactions were sharp again, with him making a few very good saves, with his command of his area improving all the time - when he comes for the ball now most the time he gets it, whereas this had previously been an issue... Distribution is also improving, so all in all I think we have a really top-drawer keeper on our hands here!

'Now Avram Grant has to decide if he sticks with him or brings David James - if fit - straight back in again, as he has previously?

'At the end of the day you cannot help being 'ill', which is what the claims were, then again there are also 'reports' that James cannot play weekend and midweek games back-to-back - if that is the case then we may well need to look at his situation with us...Not that I want to sell him of course, although I am becoming more and more confident in Begovic's ability.

'So, I would, as much as I rate Jamo, stick with Beg tomorrow as he has done NOTHING to warrant being left out, has he?'

As it happens Begovic DID indeed retain his place in goal against Liverpool, with David James still absent from the squad, illness again believed to be the problem...

To be honest Begovic did not have a lot to do, but on the whole what he had to do he did well, so he continues to, and as the title says 'grow in stature', well for me anyway, although I am sure others will agree, right?

Like I say, he did not have a lot to do, but the 1 effort on target - serious effort - that he had to deal with he dealt with wonderfully. If you have not seen the reaction save he made, to a deflected effort, check it out! It really was FANTASTIC, what reactions he showed - he was very much going one way, yet to react as he did to save it was awesome.

After the Burnley game, which was poor but we won which is the main thing, I said that his saves, especially the second one 'could' prove our 'Pedro Mendes moment' this season - perhaps, not getting carried away, we could look back at these in May as being that moment...

We cannot leave him out against West Ham, can we?

Whilst I still do not want to sell James, should people come calling I would not be - if the money was right of course - anywhere near as concerned about him leaving as I was, maybe as little as a month ago to be honest!

I think, whatever happens, we are left in safe hands for the rest of this, and future seasons as this is putting aside the kid we have coming through the academy side too...

I am so glad that we have a very promising keeper to fill James' boots when needed. However, James is our number one, and he should not be left out. He has been massive for us, and although lately he wasn't playing, it should be understood that he will get back to the side on Boxing Day. Grant, in a recent interview said thet James is the best in England, and that says it all. Thank God that Begovic is still very young and he will wait for his number one spot come next September when James quits the game. By the end of May, it seems to me that both James and Begovic would have played the same share of matches.

when was the last time begovic did something wrong? got caught in no mans land? failed to collect a ball? He is turning into a class keeper!
pompeycarpet
dont put too much pressure on him though... but i belive he can be a great keeper.

Personally ive said it before but i wouldnt care if james went in jan. i dont think we would get anything for him like the press keep speculating, but it would get considerable wages off the payroll where more loanees or cheap purchases in the positions we need could be financed, provided dreaded embargo (sounds like an argie midfielder) is lifted. I think the attributes of james v begovic is so close altho ball distribution by james is far better.

i agree with super bock tbh, but i think i said ruffly as much last summer, i don't want james to go but i have complete faith in asmir and will continue to... and his wage must be one of our highest so to get it off our wage bill might not be such a bad thing....

if a 700k bid comes in accept it because hes on about 60k a week hes our top earner and this would free up space for another signing ! which we need.

I'd hate to lose Jamo, he's done wonders for us, but like Rug I now don't fear him going.

I don't think Jamo will be going anywhere. Bego is good, but he's still learning. He knows his time will come....Jamo could call it a day after the WC. Who knows.. Got to admit though that Bego has done all that was asked of him when he's played, and done it with aplomb too.
cornypomp
I think he will be great, still is a number 2 behind Jamo, but i rekon next season he should step up and take the starting spot
nodster
Could be the ideal final season for Jamo, regular place but not every game - fresh for World Cup and with a confident understudy.....the more games Begovic gets, the better for us and him. Next season he should be our number one for sure PUP

I must admit, I am very surprised & very pleased with the his progress. This will soften the blow when Jamo goes.
