Did we miss a trick?

Did we miss a trick?

Ok, the likelihood that we were actually going to pay a transfer fee, no matter how 'minimal' it was, for anyone last summer was slim, but did we miss a trick in not making more of an effort for Tyrone Mears?

Obviously NO ONE could 'replace' Glen Johnson, they could merely look to help 'fill a void' created by his big money move to Liverpool - and Mears was one of those names 'mentioned'.

In all honesty I 'scoffed' at the suggestion, but with Burnley paying something like £500,000 for him this looks like money VERY WELL spent as the guy is doing a good job - such a good job in fact that there is even some talk about an 'outside chance' of England recognition as Johnson's understudy!

From what I have seen of him he looks a decent player going forward and can also defend, some would argue that he is actually a better defender than Johnson as 'defending' is his main priority, although he does get forward well.

We are struggling with both our full back areas - Steve Finnan is a good right back, and if he could stay fit enough for long enough would be a very good signing for us. Anthony Vanden Borre does not convince me as a right back, then again nor does Tal Ben-Haim - but he is a better right back than left back.

Although I guess it is not worth thinking about 'what might have been', we have to think about what is. Even so we will get to have a look at him in the flesh this weekend, and - from an England point of view as much as anything - I am actually looking forward to this, although I hope he has an off day of course!

Northampton (h) - Securing home advantage?

Some could view this as a 'dead rubber!' It isn't as Champions Northampton will want to end on a high and Pompey will want 'an advantage' against Plymouth in the play-offs. Right?

Pompey MotM at Hartlepool

Pompey went into the penultimate game with a slim chance of a top 3 finish. A 2-0 win at Hartlepool saw the Blues do what we needed but wins for others ended those chances.

Jeepers keepers! Freebie options explored

An emergency loan arrival of a goalie has been ruled out by the Football League but this doesn't mean a free agent cannot be signed by Pompey should a suitable option be found?
