'If It's Football, It's Vital'

No wonder we are up **** creek!

I suspect that most of you have now seen the articles about agent fees paid our by premier league clubs between October 2008 and September 2009, which saw more than £70m paid to them...

It is also well documented that we had spent WELL beyond out means prior to the brakes being slammed on, or should that be forced on by others?

Despite these well documented troubles, and the decreasing amount of money we paid out to sign players, and the increasing amount we bought in, we still paid almost £3.2m in agent fees in that time period - I guess due to the cuts given to these agents for the large fees being brought in?

This put us among the sides that paid out most in agent fees, with only Citeh, Chelski, Liverpool, Spurs, West Ham and Wigan paying agents more than us...

The full list is:
Arsenal - £4,760,241
Aston Villa - £1,708,374
Birmingham - £974,982
Blackburn - £1,610,885
Bolton - £3,166,611
Burnley - £468,398
Chelsea - £9,562,223
Everton - £2,008,407
Fulham - £1,469,258
Hull - £1,599,188
Liverpool - £6,657,305
Manchester City - £12,874,283
Manchester United - £1,517,393
Portsmouth - £3,184,725
Stoke - £716,042
Sunderland - £2,007,040
Tottenham - £6,066,935
Wigan - £3,527,548
West Ham - £3,576,972
Wolves - £1,235,703

Unfortunately, although I guess some would say fortunately, agents make so much money - and it would appear that the ones that we have dealt with, most likely the 'usual suspects', saw us coming!

I've never really understood why clubs have to pay an agents fee. The agent works for the player, negotiating wages etc on his behalf and takes a percentage from him. Transfer fees are negotiated between the selling and buying clubs. What are clubs paying for? Perhaps to persuade the player to go to a club he doesn't really want to go to?

Unfortunately guys, I guess it is because we have to try and therefore PAY much more to attract the big names !!! Altho, I suspect next years bill will be drastically less (or zilch) due to the drop in standard! I wasn't surprised.

Wigan have paid more, yet we arent up ***** creek.

If you want the player, you pay the agent's fee. If you don't pay his fee, someone else will & take the player. Be prepared for a few more agents fees come January!!!

Yep I'm afraid matts got it right there. The leeches on the back of the game I know, but I can't see them going away anytime soon...
cornypomp
The Players should pay their own agents fees, not the clubs.
Midge
the crapper the team the more the agent wants ! ie man u only payed 1.5m in agent fees because the player wants to join them so much.
pompeyhussler
Centrelink, I dare say you would be up Poop creek if it wasn't for your Chairman incurring the loss. It is reported 90% of your income is going out on wages...Exactly the same percentage as we were throwing at our mercenaries! Take DW out of the equation and you'd soon find out how long you'd last!

Peter Storrie's negotiating powers to the forefront again.

The clubs also employ agents to buy/sell players - hence the amount we've paid out. PUP
NorfolknBlue
Did we pay agents to sell players? Never spent big money on anyone coming in, so i guess so
paultsmouth
Old Wobblechops on Sky Sports news today saying that this is all the fault of the chief executives (translation: whatever Storrie has been nicked for is nothing to do with me guv) and honest blokes like him just want to get on with coaching teams.
