Can Grant save us?

Can Grant save us?

'Avram Grant IS NOT going to be able to prevent Pompey from being relegated this season', not my vote, yours - although these findings from pompeyrug's poll are thoughts that I do not want to agree with to be honest, although I think we 'might' soon have to be realistic about this...

Of course there are still a lot of points to play for, but looking at just 2 wins from 14 games is not pretty viewing is it and in all honest - when being completely honest - for us to gain another 8-10 wins, minimum, that I think we will need, do we think we can get this?

Grant started off with the 4-1 defeat against Manyoo, which whilst maybe flattering to Manyoo was still another defeat for us regardless and was pretty much in keeping with our season - we played well, or fairly well, especially in the 1st half, but missed chances again cost us.

We CANNOT write off games against the likes of Manyoo, but from here on in it is mostly likely games against others bar the real 'big boys' that will define our season I guess, which makes the game against Burnley at Fratton next weekend a MUST WIN game no exceptions!

  • What the poll asked - Simple, yep or nope, honest answer can Grant lead us to safety?

  • How you voted - Nope 56%, Yep 44%

Before we move on what are your thoughts on what the last poll concluded? You know what to do, thoughts below please guys...

Guys, c'mon! Give the guy a break.. you can't expect the man to work miracles the first game vs United. As a Chelsea fan I think you are lucky to get him as a manger. After all he took us to the Cl Final.. Just give him some time. I think you will make it. Good luck!

I think that poll was more a reflection of the fact we are already 7 points from safety, don't have the strongest squad in the world, and will lose some of our better players to the ACoN. Grant could be a good manager for us, but he has a very tricky task getting our forwards to score goals!

If only it was as simple as relying on Grant to pull us out of this crap. From what I can see, he's a portly middle aged bloke and is only the manager after all. I think he is, and will be more tactically astute than Hart was, but he's not God is he. He's still got the same players to try and shuffle around. But he can shuffle all he wants, if there's chances but no end product, then it's curtains. I can think of teams in the distant past ie West Ham, who at times were bordering on playing exhibition football in Div 1, but couldn't put the ball in the net. Result..curtains. If we can't get to 10+ points by Christmas, we are stuffed in my opinion. As a Pompey fan, I won't believe it until the maths tell me, but if I put a neutral thinking cap on.....the writings on the wall. Still, as I've said before, it's football, anything can happen and just maybe there's a chance of getting David Vila on loan in January.

Burnley, Sunderland, Chelsea, Liverpool, West Ham, Arsenal before the transfer window opens. I can't see that we're going to get more than 5 points. AG hasn't inherited a Chelsea and I can't see him doing any better than PH would have done. Please, please, please AG prove me wrong.

No he can't ! Hate to say it, but this just highlights the pathetic decision to cut PH free at this time. I've said it before, but Grant is not all that! Experience in Israel (not even equivalent to MLS in the US), PFC as Dir of Footy, and a nailed on Chelsea squad! If we get relegated, how many of you can see AG staying ?? Not me. PH was loyal and would probably have remained so. This was just a shallow move by our fantastic Board and owners to shift the blame. Unless they can guarantee AG around £30M in January then I don't see what difference he can make. With the financial fallout in Dubai then I can't see us getting much to spend. Remember the Mirage is a property geezer and even tho he is Saudi based you can bet your bottom shekel that his fingers along with SAFs will have been burnt in this fiasco! I know PH had his issues (tactics) but I'm sure AG will have his also! Too right, Burnley is a must win and if not then AG will collect flak straight away. PUP, I will be there supporting you in league and cup.....but only because my heart is ruling my head, as usual! This time last year I was setting off to Wolfsburg!!

i guess i would have been too Barney, how much has changed in this year eh...

grant, like hart before him, has a hell of a job on his hands but IF he can get the players doing something alittle different with the way he sends them out to play he 'should' get better results than hart - if not then there was no point making the change, so i like to think grant can make this difference, altho you have to be realistic and i suspect that if we cannot pick up around 6-9pts by the end of the year we will be just about done as we will not splace alot of money on players if it looks like we will be going down will we - not that i expect us to do this anyway!

as said before, actually working the keeper was a positive from the weekend and we did this several times - the next progression is finishing these chances!

but the squad has Tommy Smith and Danny Webber in it!....And don't forget the much maligned Utaka. Play the guy in his right position and I'm sure he can't do any worse than our current lineup.

    An unexpected visitor

Pompey's Burgess was clearly at a loose end when the game at Crawley was postponed. That much was initially obviously with the level of desire to be involved in footie later revealed.

Cook - no need for a prolific marksman

Cook has said Pompey's lack of a 25 goal striker - I still think we have one - isn't going to impact on our promotion chances. I can see both sides of Cookie's opinion here to be fair.
