Grant on Manyoo defeat

So, Avram Grant unsurprisingly started with a defeat - although losing 4-1 might have been a little 'harsh' against Manyoo, that said they did what we failed to do, they TOOK the chances that presented themselves to them...

Grant felt it was a 'strange game' as analysis of it would show that the scoreline might not have been quite as reflective of the game as it suggests, so he was happy with the amount of chances we created against the current premier league champions - feeling we probably had more than 'better teams' would have created - but knows we have to put them away!

See his views on the above and more, including thoughts on both keepers, the 'penalties' and our upcoming league cup game, in this sky sports video below...

All in all it was a case of same Pompey different opponents, well same Pompey different manager - you could have written the 2nd half script I guess, right? We have a really good 1st half but failure to take chances would cost us in the 2nd half, as it did!

I hope that Grant does take the league cup seriously; from the sounds of it I am not sure how much that will actually meant to him?

Until we take the chances we are creating, and at least the keeper actually did make 2 or 3 very good saves to deny us - so we worked him - we do not have a hope in hell of getting out of the bottom 3, which in all honesty, and lets be honest - not that I am giving up of course, is almost getting to the point now where it just will not be possible anyway as we are virtually as a stage now where we have to win half our games, realistically can we do that...

The battle is not over yet. The teams above us are all losing points and we are only 7 points away from safety; that isn't alot isn't it?

I was surprised that we started the second half so poorly after a really encouraging first 45 minutes. However, the difference in class between the two sets of players was noticeable. They also seem to be faster. Rooney, like Tevez earlier this season, never lets the opposition rest and take control, he puts people under pressure all the time and this stopped us getting any purchase in midfield. What has made Pompey players impressive this season is when they show this never-say-die approach. Piq isn't doing it yet - how many times does he wait for a ball to come to hm only to see it intercepted by a nippy defender? - and Dindane isn't doing it enough. Tommy Smith always puts the opponents under pressure and this, to me, always seems to raise Dindane's game. Yebda's good at this too and, of course, Mad Billy Belhadj. They may not have the class of the Manyoo/Chelsea types but the only way we are going to make a second rate team win is with a first rate attitude. There!

No surprises, but not a game I expected us to get anything from either with PH or AG. The real test is next week and altho I hope the cup game is taken seriously, I would expect Burnley to be the main focus...good luck AG, I didn't want you in but wish you luck - Burnley 3 points or I will be on your back from the start....! We're 8 points from safety and I don't expect West Ham to start losing to accommodate us. If we get out of this it'll be an even greater 'Great Escape'.
