Begovic recalled

With David James set for a spell on the sidelines The Pompey Site has confirmed that Asmir Begovic has been recalled.

This happens despite the fact that his loan with Ipswich was not due to end until mid-January and we still have Jamie Ashdown and Antti Niemi as 'back-up' keepers...

I would imagine that it 'almost certainly' means that Begovic will be in goal for the Manyoo game, right?

As much as I have nothing against Ashdown, I would really hope that this is the case as I could see Begovic being furious at being recalled from regular 1st team football just to sit on the bench again - and that 'could' lead to problems.

Then again I would imagine that Ashdown would not be best pleased should Begovic come back to the club and become the no.1 again instantly!

For me Ashdown is still suffering with his injury, and I think I would not be alone in thinking that his back is going to b a long-term thing. As mentioned earlier today you could visibly see from the stands at Stoke that he was not happy, and the sight of Niemi warming up only added further worries for me.

'Luckily' Stoke did not put Ashdown under too much pressure, but I think you can safely say that Manyoo will put us under a hell of a lot more, so Begovic needs to be pulling on the Pompey shirt this weekend.

I could not really say how he did at Ipswich, as I did not see him, but I do know they were unbeaten during his 6 games for them and he kept 2 clean sheets during this period.

A taller keeper would have got to Fuller's shot yesterday.

No doubt Beg would have played yesterday had James been injured earlier. Was a real hit at Ipswich and is was great experience for him.

Can't wait to see him back between the posts for us, it's been pretty clear for a while that he'll be our long term number one from the start of next season and the more premier league experience he can get before then the better.

Quite miffed with the goal conceded, Ashdown should have done better. DJ is a massive loss, hope he is back for Burnley, a must win match!!!

I guess we'll know more about Jamo's injury later today or tomorrow when they find out the results of the scan. Hart is talking about him being out for 3 weeks. Its a great shame, but I am relieved we will have Begovic returning to fall back on, I've been very impressed with him. Ashdown's not a bad keeper at all, but Begovic is better. Especially if Ashdown is being hampered by this back injury.

Thats why Ashdown can't be sold Tracyc, his back has been a problem for a long time. I also think Begovic is a really good keeper in the making, get him in there for Manyooo!

I've never rated Ashdown, I remember watching him for several matches when he had a run in goal and don't recall him saving a shot. Every shot goes in, sure he can catch and collect but struggles massively with shots. Begovic has the potential to be a great keeper but is still young and experienced. I'd definitely prefer to have him in the team but we have to not expect to much of him. The weight of expectation can break many players!

Begovic should be starting this weekend. It was sad and frightening to see Ashdown yesterday in goal. Why not Niemmi; a goalkeeper with massive expierence of the PL? Thank God, our defence dealt very well with all that throw ins as Ashdown did not even try to reach out for one! I wonder what would have happened if James was in goal for Fuller's shot!

Yh this should mean Begovic will be in goal for the Man Utd game. great that we did call him back. But i think even if we didnt call him back Ashdown would of done fine.
