Benjani and O'Neil on the menu again?

Is this 'new news' or recycled old stuff in The Mirror today?

My money would be on a little of both but I would believe that both Benjani and Gary O'Neil are on a 'potential shopping list' for January...

We made no secret of the fact we wanted Benjani back but did not move for him over 'injury concerns', which I guess really translated to 'a lack of money' if truth be known - although we did say we would revisit this in January. I am still not sure on this to be honest; as much as I love the guy will he score the goals we need him to?

As for O'Neil, again he is another that I love and would welcome back but where is he going to fit into the side? The beauty with him is at 26 he still has plenty of time ahead of him so he would be for the here and now, not just the here... Although Wigan, Bolton, Blackburn and Birmingham have been 'credited' with an interest along with Everton and Fulham.

All in all it boils down to money - having enough to bring them in, and of course having this transfer embargo lifted, which we are being told will be the case...

O'neil would replace O'Hara when he returns to Spurs.
007
Anyone else want someone new? Sorry but they're getting on a bit...
FootyFans
Not sure if either would fit in now with the squad we have. If O'Hara goes would O'Neil take his role, not sure he would as probably he is a right sided player and Yebda I think is improving every game and would be hard to push him out. Benji, love the guy for his work rate but has he got enough goals in him?? Still got Webber and Smith to bring in to the side on a more frequent basis yet, so not sure if he would get much of a look in.
blarmy
Both were true Pompey heroes! However, their day has been and gone. We need a flair midfielder and a proven goal-scorer. Neither will have played top flight football for many months. I feel that the hierarchy are going down this route for sentimental reasons to get the fans off their backs - NOT GOOD ENOUGH! Proven goalscorer and keep hold of O'hara. (But I still wouldn't say no to either - on top of a proven goalscorer - spesh as the ACN is approaching). PUP

Thoughts are pretty much in line with those above. I'd really like to snare O'Hara though, the guy's a midfield dynamo, makes things happen. Harry's going to want at least £5/7mill for him. Depends how much cash is going to be made available. Proven goal scorers don't come cheap and won't fit in to our new tight wage structure.
cornypomp
the mirror described us as carling cup quarter finalists!! not bottom of the league premiership strugglers!
ruffcider
Ah thats good, cos were not really bottom now are we, only on goal difference. Also would be great to see the two back at FP, but i dont no if they can still kick it.
PompeyFcMad
It's funny how things change isn't it. A couple of months back, before the transfer window closed, we were all desperate to get someone, anyone.... Now we stand back, look at Bengi & GON and ask if they are good enough to get in the team. Things must be looking up.....
cornypomp
Right on cornypomp. At the start of the season we were all apprehensive but now we have a team we're falling in love with, who wear their shirts with pride. I like the two players but taking them back for sentimental reasons is not the right approach. We must look for players who will enhance the team. I think Pompey are in a stronger position now and can afford to pick and choose the right calibre of player.

o'neil possibly yes, benji no liked his work rate but will never have the prolificacy needed
Super Bock 1898
Benjani is a squad player. Even if he comes on for a few minutes every now and then; it helps. It is much better to have him sitting on our bench rather than up there at Eastlands! Bring Benjani home. Please!!!
Pompey Malta
Benjani I believe would also need a work permit which could be a problem as he has not played for Zimbabwe for some time.
eastneydave
To be cynical we need people who are going to keep us up this year, in terms of Jan 2010 window. UNless we have a mental run of victories before then, we're not going to be able to be too choosy. I'd take anyone able to stand upright and run their knackers off for the club
hammersmithblue
we really do not need these 2 now.. the squad is starting to work well together and to bring ppl in without them having to prove themselves would be unfair.. all we need is a strong centre back!
nodster
I'd rather see new people. Reminds me when it was summer after summer of Yakubu return rumours.
Lysimachus
And that was REALLY boring...
Lysimachus
Ive been pondering this for a while and have come to thecoclusion that if the Benji's injury is overwe should condider it. He has strength and size which most of our forwards don't seem to have. Gary O could be goodbut where does he fit it in, although I think he is better than Brown or Axe. They didn't become bad players and will play 100% every game. It's a matter of balance, team and Bank.
russellm
Like Corny, a couple of months ago I would have snapped them up. After the Wigan game, I'd sooner keep what we've got.
UKTony
Living in yesteryear with rose tinted glasses, some may say. I'd rather have Defoe & Diarra back, lol!!!
storagematt
Oh Matt. Statistics show that Pompey were better off without Defoe! Fact. Diarra is something different than; he is special in every way. I would love to have him to replace Mokoena!
