'If It's Football, It's Vital'

McCarthy 'linked' with Pompey?

Despite the fact that we are still a couple of months away from the transfer window re-opening, not to mention the fact that we cannot sign any players anyway - and even if we can, as this point in time we do not seem to have 'anything to play with' - we are being 'linked' with Blackburn striker Benni McCarthy...

It is 'said' that the 31-year-old wants to leave Blackburn as he is not being given the chance to show what he can do and his agent does not think he 'fits the style' that Fat Sam likes to play.

Some reports are 'linking' us with him so he can be 'reunited' with his South African colleague, and also former Blackburn player, Aaron Mokoena as he looks to 'push home' his chances of making the world cup next summer.

How true this is is anybodies guess, even if there was any truth in it how much we would be willing to pay and how much Blackburn would be willing to sell to a 'potential relegation rival' would remain to be seen...

I think that we all know what McCarthy is capable of, and I also think that his goalscoring record and pedigree speaks for itself but he is known as being something of a 'disruptive influence' at times.

All in all though, as he knows he needs to perform if he wants to get back into the South African team I think this 'could' work in our favour? That said I will believe it if/when it happens though to be honest - and do not think it will...

Another 'link' has seen Swedish international Kim Kallstrom said in the same breath as Pompey. But West Ham 'favourites' to land him in the New Year. Again, for me he is a quality footballer but I will believe it if/when it happens!

Until we have a transfer embargo lifted we will not be signing anyone anyway - simples.

So, what do we think guys? Could you see ANY truth to these 'reports?' If there was would you want either, or both players?

As always, leave your thoughts below...

Shall we wait until the ban is lifted? It was said the ban would lifted by the end of last week, but it's still there.

Benni's not the man for me. Too old at 31 and as you say Rug disruptive.

TBF guys I am a Rover and met him once, he seemed like a thoroughly nice chap, hasnt really caused much trouble at Rovers either. Maybe when he was in Portugal he kicked off a bit but that was a while ago. But I still see him staying at the Rovers...

A lot of 'ifs' here & I'm not sure it will happen. However we could ask Rovers if they want to take Mokhead back? No charge, we'll even pay the bus money!

If we have our ban lifted ? If we have any money to spend ? if we even want him? if Blackburn will agree a realistic price? not a hope of him coming to Fratton
sea-juicer
could do good for us, we probs need him as dindane will be off to the african cup of nations

I am not very keen about Benni. For a player of the same age I would blindly go for Benjani. But then, do we really need strikers in January? We have Freddy, Webber and Smith when Kanu and Dindanne leaves for the AC in January. Kallstrom; probably a good signing if it happens but I am not sure, isn't he a defensive midfielder? I think we should work hard to renew O'Hara's loan and possibely buy Dindanne and/or Yebda.

hey malta, By AC take it you mean the AFRICAN nations CUP, and not MILAN.....Ive poo pooed most of harts signings except Smithy, and they've all done well.

II think Benni is a good player but if our strikers all perform incl S&W then why do we need him. I don't think the club will make any commitment for a striker yet; not for a 31 yr old anyway.

Evidence of a signing at all will do me. I'm still fretting about the embargo.
