Begovic sent to Ipswich

As had been expected, albeit a couple of months ago, Asmir Begovic has left Pompey for a further loan spell away from the club.

After spells with Macclesfield, Bournemouth and Yeovil the Bosnian international, having made his debut as a late, late sub in their weekend win - a win that secured a world cup play-off place - the 22-year-old has joined Ipswich on a 3-month loan deal.

Begovic is due to return to Fratton on January 16th, which would 'seem' to point to David James staying with Pompey... at least until then!

For me this is the kind of loan move he needed and justifies the arrival of Antti Niemi, with the thinking behind that being that we could then loan out Begovic, although we had to loan him out to a higher level and a spell in the championship is exactly what I think he needed.

I believe that former England keeper Richard Wright is back at Ipswich; so forcing his way into the 1st team might not be straightforward though...

Although the worry now for me is the fact that James is not even named on the bench for England tonight - should he miss out, with Begovic now sent out on loan, who will be in goal against Spurs at the weekend!

does anyone else think Begovic could be a future Pompey No. 1 ?
southportpompey
tbh i would be surprised if he didnt turn out to be a future no.1! altho i think this is a good move the possible timing of it seems 'odd', with jamo missing out completely for england tonight 'if' he misses spurs who will be in goal? hopefully this is just capello doing the 'experiementing' he spoke about...

is antti fit rug ?
southportpompey
Jamo's just making sure he's fit for Sat ;-)

I hope we have Jamo for Saturday. If he is not, I just hope Niemi plays. I do not like Ashdown. I am always looking forward to the day we get rid of him. He is rubbish!

southport, tbh i'd be happy to put him in as our no1 now i really do rate the guy, but obviously with Jamo thats just not gonna happen lol

Malta, I am afraid I have got to disagree with you on the statement Ashdown is rubbish. I think the lad has been shafted a bit, he was playing well until Kiely came in and became No2 and the same with James. I think he heeds a run out playing first team football and if as it appears Niemi is to be No2 (assuming he is now fit) then we should be looking to loan Ashdown out. He had the potrential to be a great keeper and in my view had he been given the No 1 jersey here or elsewhere he could/can become a candidate for the England shirt in a couple of years time.

A bit surprised he gone out on loan, you must think we have enough fit keepers to do without him.
storagematt
He needs the experience, but the timing of it is weird vis a vis Jamo's injury.
PFCblue
He is most certainly Pompey's future no.1, and on the face of it, it's a good thing for him to have a loan and get some experience, but not if Jamo's going to be injured, if he is we need Asmir. Anyone else see some irony if Neimi plays in goal on 'Arry's return to FP with his old club?
tracyc
Oops - I meant with his new club. Current club.

I thought this made it definite that jamo is going in January and therefore his replacement has more mtach experience than he could get here. Am just pessimist
