Headache? Well, not really

Headache? Well, not really

As Tommy Smith, Jamie O'Hara, The Prince and Mike Williamson are all cup-tied for the league cup this sees The News say that we are faced with a 'selection headache against Carlisle'...

But are we?

When we signed these players we knew they were cup-tied, so it is not like it has suddenly surprised us - granted I would rather have these guys in our team, or squad, but we will not so we make do with what we have, which was something we were preparing to do before these arrivals, with many not expecting these types of arrivals anyway!

Ok, after selling Niko Kranjcar, as lazy as the git is we have lost a genuine attacking threat - on his day - from midfield, which the likes of O'Hara and Boateng would have offered, but we still have other options to come into this area so we just make the most of it, if these players are hungry enough they will come in and look to take their chance, and if they do this, it will give Paul Hart something to think about, if he is going to select for each game based purely on merit and the 'you are in possession of the shirt' theory...

We should not forget that other signings, the likes of Tal Ben Haim, Michael Brown and Danny Webber can all feature, not forgetting Aruna Dindane, although it is thought that he will miss out next Tuesday as he is still not 'fit enough'.

I would also not sell some of the kids that we have as well short, people the likes of Paris Cowan-Hall could be ideally suited to the league cup, so I would not have any doubts about using him - although I think he picked up an injury in the reserve game at Villa the other night. Ok, he is just a kid and only just signed his pro contract but putting someone like Florent Cuvelier in the 18 might not be a bad thing either?

The way I see it, as much as some of the options that cannot play are players I would like to be able to lets not see this as a selection headache in a bad way, should we not see this as a 'decent' selection headache as it ensures that other squad members are kept active in the squad, and we will find out how active they want to be - if they come in and do a job fantastic, if they come in an let us down then we also find out something more about the character of the player and how 'up for it' they actually are...

Lets look to the positives, instead of the negatives on this issue eh?

The againn, when all is said and done lets just look to the Villa game first, see what happens in this game and then take it from there!

A good shout Ruggers.. I thought exactley the same when I read it - It'll give those fringe players the opportunity to get 90 odd minutes under their belt which will not do them or Pompey any harm in the long run..

This is Carlisle we are playing not Chelsea. Give those on the fringes a chance to shine & a rest for those who will play at Villa.

I echo the above. We may need them later in the season when injuries start to take their toll.

Shame I say, we needed all so called 1st teamers getting as much match time as possible at the moment. This would have been an ideal 'Training' game for them...Still nowt we can do about it, i'd just rather' ed we had this to gel in rather than do this in a Prem game

Third time lucky? Nope as O'Shea interest ends

O'Shea saw a couple of bids for him put in; these were turned down by Chesterfield. A third bid hasn't come from Pompey and it isn't going to either.

Topping last seasons tally the aim

78pts was only enough for a play-off place last season so you suspect we'll have to better that for a top 3 finish this coming season, which begins with Carlisle at Fratton.
