Webber deal confirmed

The Pompey Site has confirmed that free agent Danny Webber has signed for Pompey.

The striker, who has signed a 2-year contract, joins much to Paul Hart's 'delight': 'when I found out Danny was available I asked him to come down and train with us - and I was delighted with what I saw.

'He plays off the shoulder of defenders and gives us another attacking option.

'I wanted to sign him when I was at Nottingham Forest, but he went to Watford. He's another one who's hungry with something to prove.

I know the 27-year-old former Manyoo striker has been troubled by some injuries in recent years but if he can stay 'injury free' and show his 'goalscoring form' of a few years back then in all honesty, as far as free agents go, I think that he is - goalscorer wise - the pick of the bunch linked with...

Is he good enough though?

Only time will tell. Lets just see how things go, if you do not expect too much you cannot be disappointed, but at the same time we should not accept too little. Like I say lets just wait and see at the end of the day he knows where the goal is, so it is another option, he is now our player so as long as he gives 100%, if/when called upon, what more can you ask?

To be honest I did not even know that Sheffield United had released him in the summer, but I am also slightly surprised that no one else picked him up? Which ultimately, although I want to be positive, leaves the question, why not...

...Great... exactly the other option we needed... :| seriously, paul hart wanted 2 sign him wen at notts forest... okay, where were they then? Not wanting to stay in the prem! we need some actual goals! not missed chances.
PompeyFCUK
I think he is a good signing, i think he has some goals in him.
PompeyFcMad
Another championship reject. Yes PH wanted him at Forest but they wern't a prem team then & havn't been for a while. Well if this motley crue doesn't gel, he'll be out of a job & these players will back in the championship.
storagematt
Not good enough for Sheff Utd therefore not good enough for us, this is another ludicrous waste of money, there must be better players available.
Owenspompey
Not on the wages we are offering I fear Owens.. Still if the fellas do get it together and pull us out of the situation they will be considered heroes.. For me Webber is not an inspired signing at all but he's another stiker who will be hungry for goals .. sometimes it only takes one to win a goal.. I'm thinking positive ..
Chix
AF says there will be no chance that PH is getting the sack anytime soon. with signings like this God help us PH is also looking around the local pubs team to find some new talent .& they wonder why the FP attendances are at our lowest ever for the PL!
sea-juicer
Trouble is, it takes more than effort to score in the prem on a regular basis, that's why championship strikers tend to dry up when they get to the prem. Maybe a good impact player off the bench if he does have the pace some speak of as his chief asset. Judgment is reserved, but I wouldn't bet on him being a great success. One for the reserves I fear.
Fratton del Sol
it doesn't necessarily mean he wasn't good enough for Sheff Utd..like campbell was good enough for us but left anyway...i always thought he had a bit of something, but I am worried about the quality PH thinks is good enough for the Prem...or SAF is planning for the championship.
plymouth graham
Steve claridge has been training and playing for Weymouth and word on the street is he's getting match fit for a return to Fratton park on a 4 year contract! PUP!
moley2
he cant be worse than nugent !! he can control a ball.. and dosent trip over it.
pompeyhussler
i believe most goals are made by the midfielders, someone has got to be supplying the ball or putting in the cross for the goals. If we can start fashioning more clear cut chances from midfield the likes of tommy smith, utaka, dindane, webber and kanu will score goals, it all depends on o'hara, boateng and belhadj for our flair in the midfield
PompeyJoe
True Joe. We need to have a strong midfield, someting that Sheffield surely do not have. He might be a good player for us, but a signing such as this is a gamble. Nugent was the same and he proved to be a failure. My main concern is that we have too many players who are a 'gamble'. There is always the risk that only one will make up the grade at Prem level and the rest will be forgotten by time.
Pompey Malta
Maybe he does have some goals in him and at least he's not African; Hart wanted him at forest, anybody know Harts record at forest; ultimately - yet another Hart sick note!
russellm
I question the fact is he a better option than Nugent. I guess we will find out. I don't think so, maybe I will be proven wrong and I hope I am
race
malta,he is not a gamble as we havent paid any money for him,ok we pay his wages now but they are not gonna be high are they, not a gamble at all,if he plays a few games this year and is not good enough then we can make a profit on him and sell him on to another tem, maybe getting promoted next year.
JASON R
Of course this is a gamble, Webber has been around the lower league since his release by Man Utd.He was not a success at Port Vale, Watford or Sheff Utd, he will cost us money, signing on and agent fees etc. plus his wages. There must have been other players who would have given us better options, Webber will be the same as Nugent, a decent Champioship striker, but out of his depth in the Premier League.
Owenspompey
U got a half decent player there.. Especially on a free.. Good luck to him & U pompey boyz..
