Who misses out?

We have suddenly gone from having no options to plenty - none more so than in midfield...

An abundance of defensive midfielders has suddenly been added to with some more with similar qualities, but also some with offensive ability too!

In total we have, and in squad number order:

Aaron Mokoena
Hayden Mullins
Papa Bouba Diop
Michael Brown
Richard Hughes
Angelos Basinas
Kevin-Price Boateng, or 'The Prince'
Jamie O'Hara
Hassan Yebda

I think that we all know that 4-5-1 will be the formation that Paul Hart goes with. The 'wide men' we use in this formation will 'just about' be taken care of although Belhadj, once a proper left back returns, will be battling for his place in a more advanced attacking role, but it is the '3 in the middle' that will see the most competition.

Brown would be hard done by to miss out, but with Mokoena the captain he 'should' play - not that I am saying I would play him week-in-week-out, but that is what the captain does, which means we will most probably then see O'Hara, Mokoena and The Prince as this midfield trio, well at least for starters against Bolton...

But, what would your central trio be, in Hart's preferred 4-5-1 formation, again as I say this is what he will play.

So, discuss away ladies and gentlemen...

Brown, Mokoema and O'Hara for me. Although I would expect this to change as I can see Brown picking up a few cards.

To be honest I dont rate Brown very highly and would do a strait swap for O Hara, at spurs we did like O Hara on the LM but he does not have the pace to push down the wing, I still feel he will develope more into a CM. The boy is tough as nails. As for the Prince I think weve seen enough of him to make up our minds,ill let u guys decide on him(abit gangly to the eye too)

Hughes, basinas and mullins should be bottom of the pile, and (in my opinion), closely followed by mokoena. Brown would next, folowed by diop. As we havn't seen the other three play, it's hard to tell how good they are - but my initial reaction to them, would be that the "three in the middle" should be O'Hara, Boeting, and Yebda.

errrr, very defensive & high on the quanity but low on the quality. No doyubt though, competition for places will help. The fact that many of these players will pick up a lot of yelllows & no doubt a few reds will mean we will use the options. Should change things a bit!

Saturday, James in Goal Kaboul Right Back Tal Ben Haim and Mokoeana Central defensive pairing. Hrierdarsson Left back Midfield Right to left, Smith, Boateng, Brown, O' Hara, Belhadj Forward, Piquione Bench Begovic, Utaka, Borre, Diop, Williamson, Hughes, Mullins. As a team Pompey have no left sided cover with only Belhadj, Herman, O'Hara and Hughes the only left footed player at the club, so if Herman is still not able to play Saturday , expect Belhadj to drop back to Left back and O'Hara to move out left, with the defensive midfield role going to Mullins. Just my opinion.

Thats our team you are talking about russell! I'm very excited and can't wait for Saturday myself. I hope we don't have to watch Hughes anymore. I can't say anything about who should play and who should not at the moment, as I find all these new faces very confusing, but I do hope that Hart doesn't leave his substitutions until injury time as he usually does.

Pleased with the signings midfield wise. Astonished Al Fahim didn't delve into his "endless millions" and issue us with a proven premiership striker, Dindane has pedigree but has comeback from a nasty injury, i still feel Utaka is a sleeping giant, Kanu of course can never be faulted but besides the hopefuls we have no reliable goalscoring sauce. The Webber acquisition is simply quantity based. O'Hara and KP Boateng will come good, should've seen that Kranjcar was on his way when these two arrived. Despite coming across pessimistic here im brimming with confidence and belief about the Bolton game tomorrow and the season in general. One more hint of negativity still, as much as im a fan of Paul Hart and would like him to succeed at the helm like i did adams, i feel his numbers soon to be up, especially if Fahim makes that south stand seat his and hears the so far unwarranted stick that Hart gets!. Play Up Pompey, i tip Piquionne to open his account tomorrow.

Bolton's Wilkinson unlikely to play for Pompey?

Cookie isn't too hopeful of Wilkinson being fit for the play-offs against Plymouth, which means Pompey are probably unlikely to ever see the Bolton striker in a Blues shirt!
