Deadline day round up

Deadline day round up

As Vital Pompey kept you so entertained yesterday the articles were coming thick and fast - this might have meant that you missed your chance to comment on individual transfers, now is your chance as we round up Tuesday's transfer deadline day dealings...

Tal Ben Haim - The Israeli central defender arrived from Citeh for an undisclosed fee, something thought to be around the £2m mark perhaps? He has had an up and down time recently but he has a point to prove and will want to do it here.

Hassan Yebda - Pretty much out of left field as this one crept up on us in the final days of the window before his loan signing from Benfica was confirmed. My concern is that he is another defensive midfielder, that said if he is an improvement on what we have so be it.

Mike Williamson - Another defender that adds greater depth to these defensive ranks. Talk is that we paid Watford £3m for him... Is he worth that kind of money? Time will tell. He is highly regarded, and his rise through the ranks has been swift so lets give the guy a chance eh. For me we are now looking much stronger at the back as a result of the deadline day dealings.

Tom Kilbey - A very highly rated young midfielder who finished joined top goalscorer in the reserve league last season with 18 goals I think? An initial 1-month spell with Dagenham is almost certain to be extended and this move will benefit all concerned, with Tom likely to return a better all-round player and a hungrier one.

Matty Ritchie - All the talk was of a permanent transfer to Notts County, and it was Notts County that the talented winger joined but only on a loan basis until Christmas. I am more than happy with this as everyone benefits, I just hope that he does return although I have serious concerns that he will not be doing this.

Niko Kranjcar - A deal was 'said' to have been agreed long ago, with this rubber stamped on Tuesday evening. Yep he is a creative influence but lets not kid ourselves has he been asserting this influence? Exactly, so we will not miss it and will no longer need to accommodate anyone. Talk of a £2.5m-£3m is too low but this has to take into account money we owe Spurs, so that must have been wiped clean which takes us nearer to a figure of £5m-£7m...

Dave Nugent - We have tried to offload Dave time after time but have never managed this, finally in the burning embers of the transfer window a deal was announced - he had joined Burnley on loan with the option to buy. Always a willing working but the lack of a final product infuriated so many and in the end I would imagine that the vast majority will not be too unhappy at him leaving, it is what his career needed to be honest.

The one that got away

Nicky Shorey - I was not overly bothered about signing him at first, although when it looked like we really could do this I was more than pleased as I felt this gave as another attacking option from the back with a genuine threat from a variety of dead balls. It was not meant to be though, it is said that not assuring him that he would be an automatic 1st team player cost us - in some ways I can see why he would refuse as he was leaving Villa to get this, but in others this is what kind of sums up the modern game. It is just a shame that it took all day to realise this as we could have potentially looked at another late loan signing instead...

Your thoughts?

So there we have it, the dust is settling, we now know what we have to work with - this is our lot. Obviously everyone would always like 'one more' or 'this or that player' but we are left in pretty good shape, and a much healthier one than we were even as late as the end of last week!

So glad that the window has slammed shut until after Xmas at least, now we know what we have to work with. All in all I think Uncle Peter and Paul Hart have made signings above what we were possibly expecting (Viduka, Bopp etc) and Ben Haim and Dindane (although last week) together with Jamie O'Hara will prove to be inspired signings I'm sure.. as will I think the Watford pair will to. I also like the look of Yebda and Boateng and was imp[ressed with Brown on Sunday too. OK so we still don't have a recognised playmaker or a 15 a season goalscorer but the lads will just have to roll their sleeves up and get on with it between them - And they will.. Finally as I'm sure you are all expecting from me .. I am delighted that Pompey no longer employ the laziest player in the premiership and our final 'Look at me I'm a superstar' player has left the building .. Pompey are (as should be) once again a hard working/play for the shirt team.. Quite honestly I'm well happy .. Bring on the Bolton !

That is what it is all about - proud to wear the shirt and die for the cause. Those that went were not except perhaps Crouchie so let's move on and as Chix says our season starts with Bolton.

Not a bad days business - but creativity, set pieces (other than Belhadj) and goals?
02/09/2009 09:20:00
Bopp is a free agent remember - he could sign at any time! In fact he may have already!!
02/09/2009 09:21:00
Can't wait for Bolton - we really really really need to win.
02/09/2009 09:23:00
Anything been heard or seen of Zenden?
02/09/2009 09:35:00
There were rumours about Zenden on Sunday.. but they may have left it until after the window closed to sort it out .. With Shorey falling through (meaning Belhadj is consigned to LB) I'd be surprized if we did not see him sign tbh
Free kicks = Jamie O'Hara
02/09/2009 09:53:00
Cheers chix, i think he could do a job for us.
02/09/2009 09:55:00
Viduka is also a free agent so we could yet sign the greedy lard arse (I didn't say "greedy lard arse Aussie" because that would be racist).
02/09/2009 10:17:00
I'm glad we got another defender in and it's good to see us splashing a bit of cash. Hope these signings can impress against Bolton, I wonder how many we'll see.
