Offer for Smith accepted

Watford have released an official statement that says an offer from Pompey for Tommy Smith has been accepted.

The statement, on their website, said: 'Watford can this evening (Tuesday) confirm the Club has received and accepted an offer from Portsmouth for attacker Tommy Smith.

'The Premiership side made their bid for the 29-year-old late on and it is now down to the player to decide upon a move to Fratton Park or Reading, after the Hornets had accepted an earlier bid from the Berkshire based club.'

In all honesty he is not the type of striker that I would be looking to sign, as you just have to look at the amount of time spent outside of the premier league to think 'is he premier league quality'...

You also have to think 'is he really any better than what we have?'

I would question this to be honest, but what do I know...All in all though any signing is pretty much welcomed at the moment.

Personally, i like him, have done for a while. I'd welcome him here, surely he can't be as bad as Nugget! Would prefer Beckford tbh, but no doubt Leeds would ask 5m-6m for him.

Surely just an older Dave Nugent. Hmmmmm not convinced by this move.

He had a good season last year but whether he's Premiership class is another matter. I can't really remember him making a mark when he played for Watford in the Premiership a couple of years ago. If he's up for the fight and has the quality then I'm more than happy for him to join. He can't be any worse than Nugget.

Maybe Nugget is on his way, and this is our replacement?

We can't afford to lose any strikers, if we sell then we are in even more trouble than I can imagine.

like andrew, i always liked him but 29yrs old, 1.8m, and a championship player....too dear, too old and un proven..could do well with a Feddy or Dindune...is he (AD) signing by the way?

The point here for me is twice now we have offered cash money for a player and a club has accepted; I'll give the guy a chance although I'm not convinced he's the quality level we need.

Any new signing is a gamble, really. We had high hopes for Utaka, and for many months we doubted him. Nugent was a very encouraging signing and the same happened. Even Piqiuonne was a gamble, but so far, so good. I would welcome him on board, especially since we will lose Dindanne, Kanu and Utaka in January, if he signs.

he plays right wing more recently and has set up 5, and scored 2 in the 7goals watford have scored this season. i duno about as a striker, but seems decent as a winger, so worth a punt for 1.8m?

I watched Nugent tonight and after many months of encouraging him and wanting him to succeed I have finally decided he is rubbish. Sorry, but he will do nothing for this club. Through balls hit him on the ar$e or the ankles, he misses open goals, he falls over, he loses the ball. If I were his team mate, I would rather pass to Johnny U than him - I'd rather pass to that stupid mascot than him. Nope, that's it - Taxi for Mr Nugent. As for Mr Smith, He's not African so that's a good start (not racist, Januaryist) and if we only tried to sign players other teams wanted, we'd never get anybody! I mean, even Stoke and Sunderland are more attractive than us. Sign him, and Dindane and sell Nugent to Stoke or a third division team.

He is actually not a bad player and seems to now be in his prime, whether he is premier league standard or not this time around I don't know. He is also a right winger now not a striker. News is he had decided to join Reading citing them as a big club going places.

Hauge is right, he is a goalscoring winger rather than Striker, agree about his age though, long time to play in lower leagues and not get noticed

Mornin lads. Tom is a good player and we will be sad to see him go. He is mainly used as a winger but can also be used as a striker. He is still pretty quick despite being 29. You have a good player here who can do a job for a mid table premier league club.

Probably means either Utaka or krunchy will go...as Utaka is cr@p and we might see now as our last chance to get any cash for the Croatian......uhmm..when is this announcement going to made about the new owner? I was in bed last night and it occurred to me that we all may be barking up the wrong tree...all the rumours are of an arabian prince/businessman.....but Israel is a Middle eastern country and Pini Zaharvi knows Storrie and Gaydamak

I still think there's something in Utaka that we can utilise. I'd rather keep him than Nugent. Nugent has always been toilet where as we have seen glimpses of excellence from Utaka. As for Smith, he's English, he knows where the goal is and he seems hard working - so that's a thumbs up from me. A present for the fans would be signing GoN but I don't know what kind of fee Boro would be looking for.

Smith is a very poor player, Hart can't motivate or develop anyone, so why pay for this bloke who has no potential. What has happened to the Didane transfer, he has medical and agrees terms and then nothing. A host of Clubs were after him, is this Kalanic all over again? Christ I am beginning to think Hart and Storrie couldn't run a bloody sweet shop for kids, they would probably stock furniture and wonder why no kids bought a 3 piece suite.

Dindane signing - http://news.abidjan.net/photos/photos/Arunasigne.jpg . Don't know whether we're waiting to announce his arrival with Tommy Smith's or with the takeover as well.

Given that he scored 17 goals playing as a winger last season and I think he can play either side. He should be a decent signing - even if only as cover in wide areas - something we have been severely lacking for a very long time!

Tommy's an absolute star, has been outstanding for the past 2 years and is playing better than ever. He's very fit, is a good finisher but makes more goals for others than he scores, he can play central - up front or withdrawn - or on either wing. He's Premiership quality alright and hope he gets the chance to show it. Would be worth more than 1.8M if this wasn't the last year in his contract. Top man and I wish him well.

We've already got one championship striker who showed the promise to be able to cut it in the prem but failed. We don't need another one. We'll only stay up with premiership class players.

Dindane, Smith and Piquionne. I'd settle for those three at the moment. Mr Hart, I've got a Tony Pulis on line four . . . something about a jigsaw?
