Nugent on his way?

The Mail is 'reporting' that Dave Nugent is 'locked in talks with Stoke after Portsmouth slashed their asking price from £6m to £4m' following his hotel brawl with Marc Wilson in Portugal last weekend.

It is 'claimed' that we want to sell him to avoid having to sell Sylvain Distin and/or Niko Kranjcar as we attempt to 'raise more cash to stave off the threat of administration'...

Quite what happened in Portugal is clearly something I do not know about, but what I do know is, as much as I like Nugent - and still retained hope of him coming good this season if played as a striker - this is not the first time that he has been involved in such incidents home or abroad.

Ok, maybe the fighting is new.

You can only give someone so many chances and with the situation as it currently is he has made himself a 'prime candidate' to be the next sacrificial lamb.

Who knows what will or will not happen but in my thinking this time I cannot see a way back for him, and in all honesty I think the amount of chances you give someone has to have a shelf life - and I am not talking about footballing chances, it 'seems' like he has had a number of chances regarding his off the field actions... There was of course the late night drinking in Spain back along for example, so it is not an isolated incident.

Until something 'official' happens though this is just more 'rumour' and 'gossip' about Nugent and what his future will be.

Assuming this really is the end for him, although dropping back down to the championship is probably not something he would agree to, I would now do the swap deal with Reading for Stephen Hunt that had been doing the rounds - a deal that I was previously against...

Question marks, should Nugent be moved on after this, would be hanging over Wilson's head as well though as can you have one rule for one and another for someone else?

The same Mail article is also 'claiming' that Nadir Belhadj is another player that Stoke are interested in signing...

Interesting that Nugent is going and not Wilson.. Is that solely because he holds more value ?.. Hull were also reported to be interested on Monday .. £3m ?? Is that a fair price ?

Not sure how bad this spat is. I regularly see both Nugent and Wilson in the Casino at Gunwharf at the weekends... They seemed like good mates to me...

Is a poor show, but can't see that it requires the lad to be sold? This seems quite convenient to me.

hes had his chance to prove himself at pompey, £3m wouldnt be bad, swap for hunt would be better. to be honest i wouldnt begrudge him banging in a few for stoke, though once again this shows us making up for the free spending of HR...

pompey still need to sell dont they, this 'fight' is a perfect opportunity to use as a reason to move him on...
we do not know that wilson is staying tho do we? some of the hunt talk also involved rumour involving a deal that would see hunt go to reading - but that would be a player plsu cash deal...

to be fair this isnt the first 'altercation' that nugent has got himself into is it, so this is also another thing that goes against him - had nothing happened in portugal, even if it was something and nothing, then nugent could have, and i would guess would have again, dug his heels in. if you make yourself a prime target to be a sacrificial lamb, that is what you will probably become...

He was going either way. He just made it easy for them to get rid of him. Or the whole story is just a good excuse to get rid of him. Either way, we get one striker in and immediately need another one. I don't agree that we've given him any chance to prove himself. Playing him completely out of position isn't giving him a chance, and leaving him on the bench isn't either. But no sense grousing about it. When we were told more had to go, we probably could have guessed that meant Nugent and Belhadj were top of the list. We'll just have to wait and see whether it also means Distin and Jamo.

Spot on Rug, Nugget will leave the club shortly and hopefully we will get some cash for him. With Fred and Zaki/Viduka possibly signing then we have a bit of cover in his department.

I would let him go. I was always in favour of him leaving and bringing in Hunt. Now, that we have Freddy (even if we need a partner, but Utaka will do, unless we get Benji as well) we really do not need him. He wouldn't be very useful by the wing will he?? So, £2 + Hunt is a very good deal. We have been talking about links to strikers but we also need wide midfielders, so Hunt is perfect. Storri, get him!

Agree with the gist of all the comments above about Nugent but I really hope that we don't sell Belhadj. Ok he needs a bit of finishing around the edges but the guy has lethal pace and always looks threatening when he's running at players, it un-nerves them. As for laying out Defoe...well that would be a bonus!

If Pullis signs him it would be a marriage made in Heaven, 2 thugs together. I'm with you Malta, get Hunt from Reading in a swop deal. I think Hunt would jump at coming to Pompey, be a good signing.

He was a hero when he gave Defoe a right hook, but now he may have cost us dearly. We can't really afford to lose him, especially for a slashed price.

Bluedr - I never got one of those pics! ;-). Mixed feelings on this one, I would like to see him get another chance, but our current situation probably doesn't allow for it. And if him going stops us having to sell someone else it could be good thing. I was beginning to have doubts on whether he was up to the mark, having kept faith with him a long time. But can we afford to lose another striker? Not sure we can. Unless there's at least 2 more coming in (after Pequionne that is).

I have a feeling he's going to make more of an impact this year (and what scouser doesn't put up his dukes after a few beers) but if anyone HAS to go, Nugent would be my pick. I'd rather hang on to Utaka and give him a shot at centre forward.

If we are to start a campaign with what we have , we need to be solid as a rock from the goalkeeper to the halfway line. Forget the other options with forwards etc.. Overlapping full-backs and a chase and get striker will hopefully keep the opposition out and still provide a threat. Must keep Belhadj and let Nugent go.

I may be in a minority but i'd keep him, so they had a spat, it happens from time to time, the situation the club finds it'self in has got to be wearing players down as well as fans. But the main reason i'd keep him is because he wants to play for us and he'll work his socks off for us, we will need that this season.

I'm a bit torn on this too as I 'still' think he has it in him and as was pointed out earlier have we really given him a chance? and we do know his work rate is high .. and that's why must people wanted to keep Crouchy !.. As for his punch up with Defoe .. It's an urban myth ...never happened .. as much as I wish it did !

Some good news at last. If we have to get rid of any more then our last two "england players" would be prime candidates. For all his "hard work & endeavour" DN offers little, his end product is consistantly lacking quality (in fact him and Utaka streaking thru on goal are the only two players that resist me lifting my a-r-s-e off the seat). And if your poll was true i would bite the spuds hands off, I would give them £1M plus a 39 year old for Cudicini, altho I would say we have had a good player in DJ and would not disrespect any of the qualities he brought to this club, but out of all the players we have rid ourselves of he (due to the excellent begovic) would be missed the least.

Super, although I voted in favour of Jamo, I still think that Cudicini is a fantastic goalkeeper. I would not mind having him, but James can give us that morale lift we need. Besides, he has to perform well because of the WC. Now more than ever, since Foster might be playing for Man Utd.

Super Bock 1898 - Everyones got there opinion of course but as good as Bergovic could be he's not ready for the Premiership just yet and as for Cudicini better than James ?? What you are saying is that an ex-Chelsea and current Spurs reserve is better than Englands No1 .. nah don't think so .. Jameo is the ONE player we need to keep at ALL costs (for next season at least) forget Diston forget Kranjcar DAVID JAMES will save many more points than any other player in our squad will win... I do however agree about Nugene tna dYtaka though..

Another own goal if we sell Nugent & to a team that will be slogging it out with us in the lower half of the table. I was hoping to see Nugent have a good crack this season. Discontent amongst the players just adds to the woes in the camp!

okay... sell him to stave off administration... he's not going to score the goals for us as any rate. would have loved to see him stay and see but rather him than a couple of others that could command the same fee.... the obvious downside is no Stephen Hunt... since we have to SELL and not EXCHANGE
