'If It's Football, It's Vital'

We want our Benji back!

'Benjani is the former Pompey favourite that we most want to see return', not my vote, yours - although these findings from jim4pompey's poll are thoughts that I do now completely agree with...

In all honesty when asked about this as little as a few weeks ago I would have had serious reservations, well actually I would have leaned more towards not bringing Benjani back to Fratton.

Now, I would march to Manchester with an army of others to carry him back to Pompey, not that I think this would be needed as if we wanted him I suspect that he would walk back to the South Coast of his own accord!

So, do it Pompey, make that move to bring Benjani home - his effort, commitment and dedication is exactly what we need, and to be fair he is a decent footballer too, worries about injuries and tarnishing his previous spell are cast aside, just go and bring him back!

Whilst we are at it can we also make a bit of a detour and pick up Gary O'Neil...

  • What the poll asked - ON the basis Pies says we're getting an old boy back...who'd you like to see most - realistically?

  • How you voted - Benjani 44%, Andres D'Alessandro 24%, Matt Taylor 20%, Gary O'Neil 10%, Sol (sorry couldn't resist it) 1%, Andy O'Brien 1%

Before we move on what are your thoughts on what the last poll concluded? You know what to do, thoughts below please guys...

on balance I might agree here, although it is probably the right midfield we've been least linked with (although apparently we'll offer a deal to pancrate) and therefore it's a very tough one... can I choose three?

"Come play, my lord!".. is what i would say to Benjani
    nodster
if i was greedy i would say d'alessandro, o'neil and benji... as i am not i would settle for o'neil and benji - i think the returns would give us all a lift, even if i wasnt that sure on benji coming back tbh just a short while ago!
    pompeyrug
I was of the opinion that 'we should never go back' for a past player .. But if Chicken and Behji are willing and available we shouldn't hesitate to snap them up.

Well, I've got to admit to going full circle. I was for a fleeting moment at the height of the takeover mania dreaming of names that I'd like to see at Pompey. But the cold light of day has dawned and with it a reality check. We're brassic and need players that ain't gonna cost a lot but who will play their heart out for the shirt. Enter Benjani....the path is clear.
    cornypomp
not too keen because he misses too many..but we all love him and his hard work..i aways felt we should have played him with Defoe, but finances made that impossible...so if we can play him in a 42 with a sharp target man yessssss...but PH is no 442 this season man i fear

Like you, I'm coming round to the idea of old boys returning. I hope I won't be disappointed if Benji does come back.

I think we will see Pompey sign 2 or 3 strikers before watching Nugent head off to Reading in a swap deal with Hunt.

I'm inclined to agree about past players returning but, don't forget, Benji never wanted to leave in the first place and I still remember how awkward and surprised I felt when it was announced he was going. Poor guy. If anyone deserves another crack at Pompey it's him. Also it would make be feel a little better about this season, which, at the moment, I couldn't feel worse about.

And while we're at it I would welcome back Gary O!
    Et_tu_Pompeii
Awkward and surprised? I was gobsmacked and absolutely disgusted with Floppychops saying he would buy Benji Fish and chips for the rest of his life, if he continued to play as he was, and then the next thing he was bieng bundled onto a plane in the middle of the night. Why is it everything floppy chops did, was done in the middle of the night?
    Gandor1
Dallessandro and Benji for me in that order, but I won't cplain about just getting Benji back and to boot I bet there won't be any plane missing, airport sleeping in Mancsville
    russellm
As I said I'd prefer D'all and Benji but Gary O would solve the captaincy issue

the club owes the fans something to cheer about against rangers and more importantley they need some signings that will stop the fans protesting at the rangers game. oniel and benjani mite be them signings and give the place a whole boost.

I want Benji back but only on loan beacuse of his age and his injuries, if he stays un-injured for 6 months to a year then sign him fully.
    tommo3146
Do we??? Why??? Lets go right back to where we started in the Prem League. How about getting Quashie, Stefanovic & Todorov back too. Might as well go the whole distance & see if Redknapp'll come back as well. I can't believe that Pompey fans are happy to go back to where we came from - we need to push on, although in fairness to all of you who do want our old players back, it doesn't seem that's gonna happen this year!! Several steps forward but this year, massive ones back! I am praying for our PL survival this year altho the odds to me at the moment don't look good! PLAY UP POMPEY!!!!
    holdz
ideally i would take taylor and d'allasandro, for the midfield goals and one of our more porlific strikers e.g the yak up front. much as i love benjii, i reckon nugent could mature into a better player whilst still having benjii's work ethic
    PompeyJoe
Well we all seem to have different opinions on this one. Me I agree with never go back but at the moment the ex players seem better bets than the trialists we are being offered. Better the devil you know eh.
    eastneydave
Without a doubt. I am ready to pay his wages!!!! Dedicated and a very sharpe striker.
    Pompey Malta
Benji had come a through a period where he couldn't hit a barn door with a banjo, but had played his heart out for the shirt, always with a beaming smile, and had just started to hit the back of the net regularly. Many of the fans love Benji, its clear he feels the same and would love to come back. Whats more, it would be a clear signal of the club listening to the fans, and lets face it, we all need a bit of cheering up right now. Plus he's probably available and likely not to be too expensive. I want to see Benji's smile in a Pompey shirt next season.
