Pompey confirm Finnan signing

The Pompey Site has now officially confirmed that Steve Finnan has signed for Pompey, the second officially confirmed arrival of the day - although unofficially we knew this!

The Republic of Ireland international had 'apparently' agreed to a 1-year contract - with the option of another - a few days ago, with sky sports 'understanding' this was done after passing a medical. With this now confirmed Finnan, who is with the squad in Portugal for the games against Vitoria SC and Benfica, is set for his Pompey bow.

Paul Hart has said: 'it whetted my appetite to think that we could get a player of Steve's calibre here.

'Both Steve and Aaron (Mokoena) have got plenty of experience and they're both very good players.'

So long as the 33-year-old can remain injury free, I am sure that he will prove a very good - and very welcome - addition to our squad and is almost certain to be our first choice right back this season.

Welcome to Pompey Stevie, make us proud. Give 100% for the shirt, the fans and the club and that will do me!

I do like th idea of Finnan... he's always been a solid performer and we simply dont have the cash to replace a Glen Johnson... even if we were to try and pick him up for the price we did from Chelsea. Happy with this one.

As a Liverpool fan, I have to say that you have got yourselves a very good, consistent player. He had injury problems last season apparently but if as long as he stays fit he will be a very good signing.
trader
Finnan will be injured for most of the season, Cranie will be playing for most of the time or Wilson!!
Owenspompey
thanks Owens for the optimistic view... I feel so much better now. I managed to get a small head of optimism up before then. So who thinks they break this news today because they haven't got any other - i.e. we need to wait until next friday before a couple of these other signings and the takeover is formalised.

look guys, James, Distin, Kaboul, Herman, Belhadj, Krancar, Diop, Finnan. None of these players would look out of place in a top six side. I reckon Nugent will get ten premier league goals, all we need is a midfielder in the mat taylor mode apart from playing on the right, cover at centre half and utaka to perform
PompeyJoe
utaka to perform...? you almost had be there Joe

We tried to find someone older but failed; still from what I remember of him playing for the benefit dodgers he would make a good captain; if he stays fit ge could be a bargain

A massive signing, the best we could get! I am happy to see him here. We have a solid back-four, maybe even stronger than last year as Johnson was often leaving some space at the back (but thank God we had him to help the helpless attack).

Pompey joe a back line of Kaboul rb disatan and HH in the centre and belhadj LB could have some merit..as for Finnan..we will have to wait and see...players usued to drop down the leagues when they got old...now they get signed at Pompey...not convinced as for The Axe in midfield...lets hope it aint a BLUNT axa..i suspect anyone who culd not get into Rovers side last year aint too good.however i did like the forward derbyshire
plymouth graham
Well despite his age I'm glad we've signed him. I mean come on who else are we gonna get for nothing with his pedigree? Good solid dependable player.....Johnson he ain't but he might actually be a better RB.
cornypomp
Thank goodness we've signed someone. With the absence of Sol's experience in defence, he should be a good influence. As for injuries - any player can get them. Graham's right, our back line could be looking quite a bit stronger now.

He's a player...An old one; but a player never the less...
pentonpompey
Oh yes and he won't be going to the ANC
pentonpompey
Finnan is good but he gets hurt easy. I think he will do well for you.
