'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Are we really after Viduka?

'Reports' have steadily grown that Pompey are trying to sign Mark Viduka?

The name has been mentioned a few times but with Nikola Kalinic's move 'falling through' - although it is still thought it 'might' be rescued? - it is 'said' that we are going to offer the 33-year-old a 1-year contract.

I really am not sure on this one at all and in my thinking we will really struggle to get enough games from Viduka to warrant his signing - it is 'said' that with all the injuries he has had the Aussie was going to call it quits, but we might have persuaded him otherwise...

At his best I could see the merits - but I feel this best is very much gone, and if he was going to retire it seems to think he does too?

This ties in with the current poll from The Rabbi - should we sign him, so as well as voting why not leave some thoughts - are we really going to sign an out of shape, out of date and seriously fragile striker?

Also, whilst the official mention is still not there, it does now seem as though Richard Hughes has let 'the cat out of the bag' that Steve Finnan and Aaron Mokoena are Pompey players, as he said as much in a pfcTV interview yesterday...

Where do u hear bout the kalinic move may being rescued? Also i dont think Viduka would be good for us. But i might be wrong, we might sign him and he'll might be scoring them left, right and centre (not likely though).
PompeyFcMad
just because the papers tell us this deal - kalinic - is dead it does not make it so, chances are we 'wont' be able to revive it but there are still plenty of reports and 'word on the street' thoughts, from home and abroad, that the deal might yet be saved...
pompeyrug
i think it may be wires crossed because a few papers are saying kalinic is off to blackburn, i gotta admit if that is the case, its a bitter pill to swallow that sams gonna get our man. Viduka.....dunno, its someone i suppose, wouldnt have chose him myself but on a year contract? its a small risk.
ruffcider
If Kalinic ends up at Blackburn then it will signal the issues at Pompey and give an indication of the SAF money situation. If we cannot find 5m to buy the player outright then it's going to be a long season. Viduka, too old and injury prone...not worth it.

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO If he turns up at Fratton Park well......................!
cornypomp
seen the blackburn reports on their vital site, i hope that doesnt pan out that way...as for viduka, not too keen on this one i must admit. on his day is still a quality player, but i do not think he will have that many 'days' - but you never know...
as for the SAF money situation, until he assumes complete control of the club we will not know and until this happens i will continue not to doubt what is happening until it happens, or not...

Viduka = chubby treatment room enthusiast.

He is free. I presume we would be smart enough to get him on a pay to play contract, and when he is playing he WILL be better than Utaka or Nugent, at least for the first half/60 minutes. I'm all for it!!! (and for those that don't know, the weather outside in Perth, Western Australia is very lovely today!!! LOL)
DJ_Bing
Rug, I agree we can only judge SAF at the end of the season, by which time I hope it is not too late. As a businessman myself I do believe he must have a trick up his sleeve as there is no logic in buying a club to see it's overall value decrease over his time in charge. Time will tell.

Oh good. Just seen this article in the Guardian: http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2009/jul/31/sulaiman-al-fahim-portsmouth-united-nations; Not to say that it is true, or even relevant, but does make me chuckle! Only at Pompey! Good to see the Finnan & Moekoena transfers on the OS now though.
Pompeytim
Viduka would just be a short term solution, wouldn't he?
eastneydave
Viduka was a great player in his day, unfortunately time waits for no man and he's too old and too injury prone to be of any real use to us now.
Steve C
No Dave, Viduka is no solution, just another soccer mercenary
Owenspompey
agreed Owen... would hate to see this guy arrive, sit on the bench and take money out of Pompey fan's pockets... though as ever if he comes and scores 10 this season, I'll probably sing his name... shameless.
jim4pompey
I would prefer to see Benjani doing it for the cause, and he will not cost five million!! Man City look keen to offload squad players so lets get in there and get him. Viduka and Zaki are not the sort of players we need or indeed can afford if money is tight.
Owenspompey
viduka Fatboy sick
russellm
Zaki the jury is out on for me but I agree wholeheartedly with Benjani instead of Viduka. I think Benjy would slot straight in and start hitting the net again. He never scored much at ****teh but then I don't think he ever got a real run, his confidence and rhythm was knocked - but I always thought he looked busy and caused defences problems, which makes that space for the other guy
jim4pompey
defenders hate playing against viduka hes one of the stongest stikers in the leauge. and he has a better header than crouch and can jump higher plus hold people off better than crouch. if he players 30 games in a season he will get 12 goals at least. him and zaki uptop defences will hate that !! if we can keep him fit he can be the striker to keep us up.
pompeyhussler
Sky are saying Pompey are back in for Kalinic, lets hope so, that will keep Viduka out I hope
Mike1954
I do seem to remember hearing that Viduka would be back from injury to play against us and feeling the fear - to me that says something. But he is knocking on a bit and we've already got one Kanu. Do agree that I would rather have Benjani back any day of the week.
tracyc
Hussler..what you say was true of him 2.5. or 10 years ago, but come on man he wont even get into the opposing area...will we have the gusto to in middle of the park to support him and ....who?..Kanu up front?...I loved him a few tears ago but now??? What a team. Kanu 106 yrs old, James, Finnan, Herman, Niemi..... Maiwairing,Wilson and Corporal Jones what a team
