Pompey's 2009/10 starting 11 - central defence

'Sylvain Distin and Younes Kaboul are the central defenders for Pompey in 2009/10', not my vote, yours - although these findings from the forum poll to determine who we think should be these central defenders, for the 11 players we will select, are thoughts that I do agree with to be honest...

I have doubts, I have to admit - and have done so for some time - that Distin will even stay with Pompey and if I am also honest I did not want this earlier in the summer! But if he does then without a doubt he would be in the team. We just have to hope that he shows us more this season, as he showed us more than enough last season...more that enough of his bad side!

'If' he stays, and I think it is fair to say this is still a big if - and if his storming across the car park at Basingstoke is anything to go by then I think it is an even bigger if to be honest - then he must be fully 'fookused' and committed, he is no good to us if not.

Kaboul, so long as he stays fit, is going to be fantastic for us this season methinks and he would be my first choice central defender, ahead of anyone else.

I really do feel, and always have, that he has everything about him that is needed in the modern game to be a top class central defender.

  • What the poll asked - 2009/10 Pompey team - central defence?

  • How you voted - Sylvain Distin - 11 Votes [44%], Younes Kaboul - 11 Votes [44%], New player (do not list names, just vote!) - 3 Votes [12%], Linvoy Primus - 0 Votes [0%], Joel Ward - 0 Votes [0%], Marc Wilson - 0 Votes [0%], Other (from our current squad - if so who?) - 0 Votes [0%]

This poll was conducted in a thread in the Portsmouth Posts forum - click here.

So, 4-4-2 is what we are going with - although with Paul Hart now confirmed I would image this is highly unlikely - and James in goal, The Herminator at left back, Cranie at right back, Distin and Kaboul in central defence...

We now have to continue to fill in the blanks for our 2009/10 Pompey 11 - which we will select from the squad we currently have, well what is left of it!

Again we will do this in the Portsmouth Posts forum with the latest poll question we want answering, which asks:

2009/10 Pompey team - left midfield? - click here to vote.

Before we move on what are your thoughts on what the last forum poll concluded? You know what to do, thoughts below please guys...

Distin and Kaboul as our central defensive partnership.. I'd settle for that .. Let's hope Distin stays and plays like we know he can do. It's not the strongest back 4 we have ever had but it's certainly not the weakest.. A lot depends what cover we put in front on then..

News this morning of Aston Villa 'hoping' Distin will join them in spain for their friendlies. 4 million is the fee Pompey are looking for. Kind of buggers up this a bit. Call for Linvoy?

IF....that is the word, and definitely a “No Brainer” however Distan will be gone very shortly me thinks, and good riddance. A good player but a moaning self-important player- who give too many penalty’s away. I just want to see who PH brings in, I am not over keen on Finnan, his best days are gone and he was never in Sols League, so to have him as an OAP…not good. Cranie I have doubts about at this level and Herman( love him as I do) is a year older. Kaboul has the potential and is better suited to central role I think. I suspect then that we will see Cranie Finnan/an other Kaboul The Hermanator. This against Defoe ,Robinho, Anelka and many many more…it’s a worry.

To be honest I'd like to see Distin like Crouch leave now...no benefit in having players who do not want to be there at the club. This means a replacement, Turner (Hull) would be one to consider.

well lets just see, eh? if distin wants to go, then let him go - he clearly wasnt happy last season, and did not look at all happy to me on saturday so i am almost expecting him to leave tbh... i wanted him to leave earlier in the summer as i think his attitude and commitment last season stank something rotten, but we cannot really afford to lose him from a footballing point of view now can we!
if he wants to stay, great, if not - as i suspect - so be it...
