The Pompey Chimes: 12th-24th July 2009

Welcome to the Pompey Chimes - the definitive guide to the past week in the world of Pompey.

Club News

Fantastic news this week as Dr SAF's takeover is complete, well just about! I'm sure all Pompey fans everywhere will welcome the Dubai-based bajillionaire to Fratton, so read about his takeover here, and also join Vital Portsmouth in saluting outgoing Chairman Sascha Gaydamak here.

Speculation over the managerial post at our beloved club also ended this week, with Paul Hart being offered the hot seat. Not something I'm overly pleased with to be honest with you all, however make your own mind up by reading about it here. Hart has also come forth and commented on the task ahead, which you can read here.

Unfortunately Pompey's pre-season got off to a slightly rocky start as Havant & Waterlooville held us to a 2-2 draw. Read the match report here. One Vital Pompey contributor Battenberg was there that evening, and you can read his assessment of the squad here.

As Sven Goran Eriksson packed his bags from Mexico a few months back he could've gone anywhere (Pompey included, eh Chix!!), but he's now ended up in Nottingham! If this wasn't the start of silly season then Maradona being linked to Pompey as a Global Ambassador is!! Read about that here, and read about how honestly ludicrous that really is here as he is linked to bring in some quality players. Must admit though, I would have loved it if it was true....

Pompey have a new shirt sponsor by way of Jobsite, which sees the Fratton End renames as the Jobsite Stand. Read about the sponsorship deal on the Jobsite website, as well as clicking here.

Squad News

Well not a lot of transfer talk this week, as even Crouch's apparent imminent departure hasn't really been mooted all that much. Click here to hear about Peter Storrie's assertion that Sylvain Distin is staying.

One player who IS linked to Pompey, however, is Nikola Kalinic. Slaven Bilic has described the Hajduk Split hitman as the future of Croatian Football, and Chimes sources says the £6m deal is as good as complete.

Chix and Dave's Quiz has entered Week 3, and click here for the latest round of questions. There are also links within this to the previous week's questions, as it's not too late to enter!

Another good read can be found here, where Paulisrael looks back fondly on his early memories of Portsmouth Football Club.

Now the takeover is complete, just about, it is time to examine the current squad, and decide who will be our captain next season in the event that Sol Campbell leaves the club. Click here to read russellm's verdict on the potential candidates. Also, the latest poll found that Distin should be the next captain, more on that here.

Shameless plug time!! Click here to read all about a new feature I'm trying to start up. If you have a Pompey viewpoint that is 'controversial', and you want to bring before the Judge for ruling, then click the link and get in touch!

Gino's Fact of the Week

Did you know that Portsmouth and Southampton have only ever played in the same league for three seasons since 1977? The seasons where 1987-88, 2003-04 and 2004-05. Including Southern League games, there have been 67 games between the clubs, with Portsmouth winning 20 and Southampton 34.

Gino's Teaser

The teams in League One next season that are ex-Premiership teams are:

Southampton, Norwich, Charlton, Oldham, Swindon and Leeds! You all got there eventually!

This week's question: Which player has scored the most Premier League goals but has NEVER scored a hat-trick?

sorry to go off topic, and sorry to put it in here and also sorry to those that commented but i deleted the belluschi artcle, as it wasnt wroth keeping it on - appears he has signed for porto and the mail has lied...
these were the comments made tho...

get him on loan then..

He has signed for Porto.
P.F.C. looks like that one out the water now as hes signed for porto .... check this out.

Fiorentina are striving to sign Emmanuel Eboué, the midfield player who is surplus to requirements at Arsenal and who would cost about £6 million. “Eboué is an excellent player, but it will not be easy to sign him,” Andrea Della Valle, the Fiorentina president, said. “We are making big efforts, but we are keeping in mind the limits we have.” Portsmouth have inquired about Ousmane Dabo, the midfield player who has one year left on his contract at Lazio, but would prefer to return to France. They are also interested in Bafetimbi Gomis, the Saint-Étienne striker. how about eboue he is quality right back and at 6million bargain. he will only rise in value. and is african so kanu do your trick and covince him to join..

he signed for porto

Gino .. Gotta take you to task on the Pompey v Saints fixtures.. There have been well over 200 games between the two sides .. Do ya want dates ;)..

Gino - I reckon the answer to your hat-trick question is Ryan Giggs .. I can't see that he has evr scored three in one game and given that he is the only player to score in every season of the Premier League since it started and I can rule out everybody else, I do think it's him .. Final Answer
25/07/2009 01:19:00
Gino - is it Shearer?

Chix - wikipedia was my source for the Saints one, so it's probably wrong! I was racking my brains for a 'fact' this week I had a proper mental block. Still, that'll teach me to use Wiki as opposed to my Pompey books (which were in the other room so much effort to go and get!!). As for the teaser, sorry Tracy, Chix is correct - it is Ryan Giggs!

Get in - I win .. although I must have to admit I did have to look up the list of Premiership top scorers before I got it !

Chaplin secured

Chaplin had a contract with Pompey until 2018 but ahead of the disappointing Notts County defeat he extended his contract with the Blues until 2019.

On this day in history...25th October

A look back at this day in history, and what was happening with Pompey courtesy of our sister site PompeyRama, 25th October.

Another Fratton disappointment

That 2nd half on Saturday against Notts County was woeful - absolutely awful wasn't it. The first 15-minutes or so of it was like a pre-season friendly to pre-season!

Match highlights - Pompey 1-2 Notts County

What a disappointment that was! The 1st half wasn't bad, in fact large chunks of it were good but the 2nd half was just woeful with a soft centred Pompey beaten 2-1 by Notts County.
