Hart confirmed as Pompey's manager

The Pompey Site has confirmed that Paul Hart has signed a 2-year contact as the clubs new manager.

Dr SAF says that he selected him as he 'commands' respect and 'knows the club inside out': 'Paul did a great job keeping the team in the Premier League last season and having previously worked as director of youth operations he knows the club inside out.

'He has immense experience and a great knowledge of the game and commands the respect of the players. I'm looking forward to working with him.'

Hart himself said it was 'an honour' to be given the job: 'Portsmouth are a fantastic club and it's a great honour for me to be manager.

'The players responded brilliantly to the challenge when I was handed the role last season and I'm looking forward to continuing that relationship as we prepare for our seventh straight season in the Premier League.'

So, it is now confirmed we know who our next manager will be - this might not be liked, but lets back him and give the guy a chance to show what he can do with 'his' team.

I'm dreading the reception he will get tonight. We just have to accept it. If we don't do this year then suspect the Doctor will reconsider things next May. It wasn't really a time for him to experiment or add his own style when he took over last season. Lets see what he can do now. I'm still concerned, but accepting for now and intruiged with regards to the new season. As much as I adore H&W, lets start with a Pomp romp.

I'm disappointed, but thats probably down to the others we were linked to, Bilic, Mancini, Sven etc who are much more box office and like many of us i'm a sucker for a big name. Anyway, if this is the decision then fair enough, if he's manager i'll back him, he deserves a chance for keeping us up. "Paul Hart's Blue and White Army!"

Why's that Gino? He was given the difficult job of keeping us up last season and achieved it, would be kind of hard on him to kick him out for doing what he was asked to do. The players rate him and he has the full support of the dressing room thats got to count for something. HR and TA never had the full support of the players. With HR if you were out you were never going to be in. Last season has gone and starting on a level playing field we will see a different approach from Paul Hart.

I believe we rejected Sven, not the other way round. He inspired me as much as Hart has so far. He's not even going to be Notts manager. Still wish we could have either Billic or Mancini, but we don't have the money for that. Also means no massive summer signings. All this is better than administration though. It's all about perspective...

Maybe we have to accept our current sitaution is better than many other others. Appreciate what we have & slowly build on it. Still doesn't stop me from cooing over Diarra playing for Madrid & thinking, this time last year!!!

This late into the off-season, was there really any other choice? Like UKTony & SteveC say, it's done, & we can really begin to move forward now. He'll have my support; I just hope to see a different style of play than last season's stay-up tactics.

I think some one said "box office"..yeh well that somes it up. I like PH, I liked TA and did'nt Like HR much, yet HR was our best ever manager sicnce I've supported the blues, so my likes and dislaikes count for zilch. My big prediction and anylysis is as stated, PH is a "Youth Worker" by trade, and thats what we will be getting-African and S American youth either on loans or part ownwership wrangles to sell on at a profit. the chairman will not care where we end up if it is above 4th bottom, but take credit for any success we might have..... Pompey are Woolworths pic n mix, players R us, and top shop all rolled into one. watch who the incoming players are in the next week. i reckon if 5 come in only 1 will have been heard of by the average premier Lg fan...and that will be a c/defender....just watch..wake up and smell the coffee folks....Rory bremner is on sky sports..He is so rubbish at impersonations....like some PL clubs. PH will do a good job

SUAC51 More box office means more dosh less to spend on the team. Mancini reportedly wanted a 30 million transfer budget so that ruled him out straight away. Sven has only ever managed at a level where money doesn't matter. Bilic has yet to manage at club level and may find it a totally different thing to international management where you only meet up with players a few days at a time a few times a year. But lets forget the negative comments guys, as the article say get behind him anyway.

Some said the Doc should listen to the fans on the choice of manager. Why? Do we unanimously agree on that? Of course we don't. Bilic, Sven, Mancini, Ranieri, Mourinho, Coppell? I reckon most just wanted anyone but Hart. OK, I'm personally not keen on Hart as boss but for **** sake, let's get behind him, the Board and the players and see where they take us. PLAY UP POMPEY!

I'm just happy that a decision has been made. I'm sick of the constant speculation and crap stories which 'journalists' like Custis have pulled out of their behinds. We know now. Its Done, there's nothing to do but give Hart our full backing. Time to stop the negativity. (Myself included) P.U.P

Give him a chance everybody ! Just think, if Tony Adams had stuck around, Dr. Al would be at a Newcastle pre season game right now. Nobody knows what Hart can do with a little cash behind him and he deserves all the support that our STILL EPL club fans can muster. GOOD LUCK PH ! P.S. I ask only one thing of him other than keeping us up again this year and that is to span Spurs at White Hart Lane.

Watch some unknown players pop in through the door from the Arab countries, and yes very dissappointed with the HART appointment, smells like we dont have much money which is a blow as when it was announced this chap was coming in we all thought great 100 million on the team, happy days....... I just hope we dont get Benji back, need someone that can hit the net consistantly, not once every 10 games.......... PUP

It's not going to be a popular choice is it? The ball is now in Hart's court to win the fans over, lets hope with a chance to bring in some players of his own and a blank canvas of a new season to start with, that he can start to do that. I hope he does well, because if he does, it means Pompey do well, that's all I ask.

Rather than seeing it as a sign that Dr. Saf in fact doesn't have much cash, or that in order to do well we have to have an imported manager whose name could just as easily be a brand of Frascati, try to look at it this way: You've just bought a business in an exclusive and highly competitive field, the workings of which you next to nothing. Your first objective is to stabilize the firm and put it on a footing to viably compete among your 16 other top competitors. You don't have much time to act and are lucky enough to inherit a competent manager who has proven to be a steady hand at the till, who costs you nothing to recruit, has a wealth of experience and has the same vision as you do, which is to steadily build equity for the long term benefit of the franchise. Would you callously throw caution to the wind, get rid of him on short notice and take a chance on that bottle of frascati ????....didn't think so.

not what we wanted, but it is what we have got - no amount of moaning or groaning will stop this, all we can now do is get behind the team and see where it gets us, if he isnt good enough he wont last, that is my worry then we lose him from the youth side of things but what can you do...
he is now the manager, we have to play the hand we have been dealt and see what happens... whilst we suspect we know what he will do, defend, defend, defend, he 'might' surprise us with his own team...

I kinda hope he does defend, defend, defend. When he played with three or four up, I thought we looked like the Keystone Kops. Just to clarify that not all of us who are unhappy with this appointment think we should have spent a few million on some big name European manager. Personally, I would have been happier if we had beaten them down the road to Alan Pardew than giving Hart an extension. And no one (well not me anyway) is denying he deserves to be rewarded for his efforts last season, but he proved extremely resistant to playing quality players he didn't personally like (just like Twitchy was accused) and he proved extremely lacking in tactical knowledge (just like TA was accused) so I just happen to feel we've got the worst of all worlds in this appointment. You can reasonably argue that there wasn't much agreement in who the fans wanted, but I would counter that the fans were pretty darn agreed who they didn't want. @RussellM: I assume Basinas is currently on the Net trying to find out if Ryanair fly to Athens yet.

Not the news that I thought I would hear after Dr SAF took over - I was still hoping that a move for someone like Ranieri would be on. If Paul Hart has got the support of the players, then lets hope that he has different tactics to employ this year. It just feels as though the heart has been ripped out of the team, and I hope that players of the type of Bopp are not the future of the club. I'm really worried ......
