Pompey's 2009/10 starting 11 - right back

'Martin Cranie is the right back for Pompey in 2009/10', not my vote, yours - although these findings from the forum poll to determine who we think should be this right back, for the 11 players we will select, are thoughts that I do just about agree with to be honest...

I have my reservations about Cranie, but if he is good enough now is the time for him to prove it.

Younes Kaboul and Marc Wilson are both players that would feature strongly for me in the squad, and even the side, this season but I do not think that right back is their strongest position - then again I am not sure that this is also the case for Cranie, but like I say it is time to find out!

If he is good enough for England at U21 level he is worth a crack for us, right?

So long as he has the right player in front of him, for me that is something that could prove very important for him and us, then we may very well have selected wisely.

  • What the poll asked - 2009/10 Pompey team - right back?

  • How you voted - Martin Cranie - 6 Votes [35.29%], New player (do not list names, just vote!) - 5 Votes [29.41%], Younes Kaboul - 4 Votes [23.53%], Marc Wilson - 2 Votes [11.76%], James Hurst - 0 Votes [0%], Other (from our current squad - if so who?) - 0 Votes [0%]

This poll was conducted in a thread in the Portsmouth Posts forum - click here.

So, 4-4-2 is what we are going with and James in goal, The Herminator at left back and Cranie at right back...

We now have to continue to fill in the blanks for our 2009/10 Pompey 11 - which we will select from the squad we currently have, well what is left of it!

Again we will do this in the Portsmouth Posts forum with the latest poll question we want answering, which asks:

2009/10 Pompey team - central defence (1)? - click here to vote.

Before we move on what are your thoughts on what the last forum poll concluded? You know what to do, thoughts below please guys...

If he was given a torrid time against the Germans and Swedes in the U21's, just imagine what will happen to him in the Prem. I for one prey this shambles that is the take over goes through and we buy a decent RB before mid August.

That GSF video advert thing (or whatever it is.....) I think I used to go to school with that 'Blake' guy.... I think his real name is Oleg?! Gonna ask a few ex-schoolmates though....
    PFCGino
Also I haven't heard it yet (no sound on this computer). Has the guy got an accent? Sorry to go off-topic but I recognise him big-style!
    PFCGino
Yep, with Penton on this. Still think we ned someone better & have MC as a back up. We need some injection of quality throughout the team or it will be a desperate season!

I'm coming round to the idea that we should try him out - he could actually make a decent central defender - so if things don't work out, we could play Kaboul out wide, and cranie in the middle.

Seeing Cranie against the Germans was a very tough time for me. Are we going to play him?? I do no fancy the idea. An expierenced RB, for me will be the better option. There are others who can come in cheap and give us a good season. I rather play Wilson, he was fantastic against Herenveen.

herenveen were rubish.. i think we should buy a more experienced right back. chimbonda would be a good buy for 2 million. and use wilson and cranie in the carling cups and as back up . .
    pompeyhussler
Cranie has a lot to learn and the Premier League is not the place to learn. For a solid defence I think we need Kaboul at RB and Cranie is one for the future without any doubt.

Umm I voted for Cranie but there are some strong and very valid arguements against it .. I didn't vote Kaboul because I'll vote for him at Centre Half and I didn't vote Wilson as to play him at Right BAck is just a waste.. I still think that he is a pro on the books of a professional club so play him .. If he is not up to it let him go .. What is the point of having these youngsters we are always gonna say 'the prmiership is not the place for them to learn their trade.?.. Don't tell me .. 'You win nothing with kids!'
    Chix
I think that I voted for someone new - but, as I said earlier, I'm coming round to the idea that cranie will be our right back for at least the first few games of the season.
    pompeycarpet
True Hussler, Herenveen were rubbish, but Wilson played some wonderful football. I cannot imagine Cranie playing the way he did in the final. Jesus, they made a fool out of him every time they had the ball. Chimbonda will be a good replacment, but we should also look abroad!
    Pompey Malta
I agree with Chix (I didn't vote) but I would be very worried if the transfer window closed and Cranie was the best choice for right back. It would take some balls to go half a season with him as a first choice defender and I doubt I have them
