Chimbonda to Pompey?

As always how this, or any other deal, is going to be made is anybodies guess but Pascal Chimbonda is the latest name to appear on the Pompey radar.

The 30-year-old has experience behind him, and to be fair is a decent defender - one that can play left, right or in the middle of the back four, so is versatile. Lets say that the former French international did sign for Pompey though, methinks this would be as our new right back...

One thing that The Mail seems to be forgetting is the man that has previously wanted to sign Chimbonda for Pompey, according to previous 'reports', is now his manager at Spurs!

Experience and, like I say, an amount of quality suits me but as a person, what I know about him - which to be fair is only what the media say - I am not sure that I like him and to me he just seems like an overpaid mercenary, then again aren't most of the footballers these days...

Another name, and another former French international, being 'linked' with Pompey today is Jerome Rothen.

The PSG winger is free to leave the French club and had been linked with Blackburn, but Pompey are now 'said' to be looking to step in and snatch the 31-year-old winger away?

The thing that I must say is giving me more of a positive outlook on the way things are going is, despite most 'reports' being nothing more than 'rumour', for us to be being 'linked' to as many players as we are must mean that things are still progressing ok with the takeover and players, whoever is doing this, are being 'sounded out'.

What do you reckon guys, 'if' there was any truth to this would you like to see Chimbonda and/or Rothen pitch up at Fratton this season?

Not sure on Chimbonda, can't imagine he would live up to filling Johnson's boots. Although that in itself is a tough challenge!

Rothen was a good player at one time. Chimbonda? Loan only, I'd suggest, given that he'd probably only come for the signing on fee!

he is no johnson, but kinda plays like him

I said about three weeks ago that Chimbonda would be your new right back and guessed the fee to be 2 million, someone responded that they would rather have Utaka playing RB.

If we had never heard of Dr SAF Chimbonda and Rothen are exactly the type of player I would expect us to buy. Let's say the takeover is dead in the water (just for arguement sake) would you not be content with these signings. For a club without any money these'll do !

I'm not a pompey fan, but I'd like to see you give cranie a chance at right back - mainly because he only costs 4 points on fantasy football and if you bench him I'll have to bring in a burnley or birmingham defender!

From a great source I see. The Daily Mail!!

Remember Chimb having a great game when Wigan first came up and beat us at Fratton, I think he may of got the winner as well, but he became more than a little mercenary after that...

I wouldn't say no to Chimbonda, would be a decent adition and for 2 mil hes pretty cheap.

To risk being shot down for being a bit negative, I think we need to start planning for life without a takeover, and this sort of calibre of player would fit the bill in that scenario. I think we'll need Hart to grind us out to Premier League safety. It won't be pretty, but the alternative of Championship football is even less pretty.

no, i tend to agree tim - and 'do not' see it as being negative... at the end of the day we need to start bringing in a couple of players at least, if freebies or cheapies so be it - if nothing else they can then hopefully become nothing more than squad players when the deal goes through :-)

what i would hope tho is that we do not put them on long-term contracts on decent wages, as we know from experience that we cannot shrug those money leeches off then can we...

Does anyone know if there has been any trialists turn up at Eastleigh? I think the best indication of cheapies lies with the training ground and when the friendlies start.I would take chimbonda and Rothen definately as like most people are saying they are cheapies who would benefit the sqaud and they are replacements for players that have left. We dont have pennant, little, thomas, traore, johnson,so thats 5 wide players there,so we do need to look at sqaud players as well as first teamers.

Chimbonda would be a very astute signing for you to be honest. he definitely wants to leave spurs to get first team football and although he isnt in the Johnson bracket, is a good attacking full back or centre back cover. at around the 3m we paid, I dont see too many full backs thay you can get who you know are Prem quality and would fit straight in.

Should have got him a few years ago for back up.To old now and will not replace johno he is irreplacable.Martin cranie should be given the chance now.

We're not going to replace Johnson with another player of his calibre. So perhaps someone like Chimbonda will fit the bill. Not sure that Cranie is ready yet, esp after watching most of the U21 final. I think the news said today that for the time being Storrie and Hart are picking/signing players. With regard to any trialists Jas, going to the friendly with Havant & Ville next week we'll see if there's any there.

I'd like to think that even if we did sign Chimbonda, he'll face the same competition for a job that he sees with the Spuds. Wouldn't be a bad fit in a pinch though I'm sure there are loads better. Rothen sounds interesting though.

Chimbonda will probably go back to France. Think he peaked at Wigan, got his 'big' move & didn't quite do it.
